Do I have to go for a PCR test?

My DH and DS have covid. They had positive LFT’s on Tuesday so we all went for a PCR test. Theirs came back positive and mine negative. Today I started getting symptoms and my lft tonight is positive. I’m absolutely sure the PCR will be positive too so is there any point in me going for one?

No

SunbathingDragon · 11/09/2021 18:41

Yes, I would, just in case you test positive in the next few months and need to prove that you have already had it and that’s why you are testing positive. Otherwise you run the risk of being treated as newly infected and having to isolate or not being allowed to travel/entry somewhere.

Hope you’re ok.

curlyLJ · 11/09/2021 18:42

Not really. Just do what you should in terms if isolating for 10 days and inform anyone who you have been in close contact with over the last 48 hours.

Also work may require one

Also with pubs requiring vaccination status I’m wondering when positive cases, once recovered, will be also allowed to mingle

Can you order a PCR for home use? I didn’t actually know that was a thing, but I’m sure I saw it mentioned on another thread.

ParadiseLaundry · 11/09/2021 18:45

I didn't bother having one. I didn't see the point. DH had had one and I'd been living with him for a week with it. I took a few lateral flow tests though.

BluebellsGreenbells · 11/09/2021 18:46

Another reason I would suppose if you needed hospital treatment you would already have had the test and you’re completed isolation date.

That's a good point I hadn't thought of.
underneaththeash · 11/09/2021 18:48

I would - you’ll have proof that you’ve had it, which might be useful in the future.
There’s no downside.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/09/2021 18:49

Yes, if only because you can test positive for three months afterwards and you may be in a situation where you need to demonstrate that you don't actually have covid because you had it recently.

I hope you all feel better soon.

This is a good point and did cross my mind. Although the government seem a lot more bothered about vaccine passports than monitoring positive tests, which would actually make a lot more sense considering the number of double jabbed people who catch it and spread it.
Inastatus · 11/09/2021 18:54

Thanks everyone. Good point about possibly needing proof so I will go and get one.

I'm in the same boat. Got a positive LFT yesterday. I'm only getting mine done because I'm travelling to NI next month and will have to take an LFT then and I don't want any issues if it shows postive...

Inastatus · 12/09/2021 13:49

@TheNemesisOfLame - I went for my PCR this morning just in case I need to prove I’ve had covid. I hope you are ok with it. I’m feeling a bit hot and achey but am double jabbed so hoping I won’t get too poorly.

I'd order on online if you don't want to go out.

RareritySparkles · 12/09/2021 13:55

In your situation I guess it's a bit pointless but at least you will be sure now.

If it was me I would but only because I had covid then vaxxed so it got it again I guess it might help research stats. But I would never know if it was two different variants or my natural immunity or vaccine wearing off. So maybe it's all a bit pointless if you have a close contact and positive lft. Its undoubtedly covid with those two facts.

I hope you recover asap

Autumngoldleaf · 12/09/2021 14:41

I would if only from the practical having it "logged" pov mentioned above.

TheNemesisOfLame · 12/09/2021 18:54

@Inastatus
I'm double jabbed too. But have been out and about in London and a small sweaty venue too...so it was probably only a matter of time.
I feel fine now really. Just a bit snotty/sneezy. And no sense of smell which prompted the LFT.
Hopefully you'll feel better quickly too.
