Media blackout on school cases this term

3asAbird · 11/09/2021 08:15

I find it really odd all English secondary schools are back including my own children's school.
They all did testing well over a week ago.
Neither the news letter or local rag that normally lives for this kind of news has reported any postive cases which find hard to believe.

I asked primary head and she said only if 5or more cases would they inform parents and I argued how do vunerable parents or parents of vunerable kids assess risk to them if they unaware.
I would love to see more transparency on how many postives each week and % of kids who have tested.
Also phe clear published figures how much infections within educational settings each week.

The current newsletters are like alternate universe where covid doesn't exist.
None of my kids are vaccinated and 1 has ashma.

Think people summoning any absence i school or staff possibly maybe covid but I dislike all the secrecy.

There is lots of information out there should anyone care to look for it

Why did you not care to look for it before you claimed there were no kids in hospital with covid?

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2021 10:37

Don’t you get the information from your school? We do

Isn’t that more relevant to you

Georgewontsleepnow · 11/09/2021 10:37

Our primary school had a teams meeting last week. They keep parent in the loop and have said they'll inform us of any known cases. So far there have been a few across the school. Because of the open and clear communication, parents are cautious in the playground but happy to send their kids to school.

neveradullmoment99 · 11/09/2021 10:41

@MarshaBradyo

There is no shortage of info and stats. On dashboards, in press.

Honestly people sound as if they miss being emotionally slammed by media with Covid stories.

I’m so glad it’s receding. It was mostly a compliance tool.

I don’t want to hear every news report lead with Covid stats anymore. Those that are still interested can find it it one go. It is easy and access no digging required.

Plus the big hit people kept going on about re schools hasn’t happened. Are people happy about that? Seems not. They want emotive stories.

This might help for a moment before people get the rise they are after.

COVID cases in UK no longer climbing

In this week’s update, Tim talks about how COVID cases aren’t increasing despite the return of all UK schools and the bank holiday weekend of busy festivals. It’s still early days, so we’ll keep an eye on rates to see if there’s a delayed effect.

Indie sage says it's to soon. How long have schools been back? It takes 2/3wks to show.

Because I don't care enough to look is the honest answer?

Because in the three schools my kids attend, nobody has been admitted to hospital? Because I know it's such a tiny risk it's not worth giving headspace to?

Because i'm double vaxxed, DH is double vaxxed, adult DC is double vaxxed, 16 year old has had her first? I'm doing my bit to stop covid spreading and personally I think this obsessing over cases and taking precautions and "being aware" is really not helpful.

noblegiraffe · 11/09/2021 10:43

Marsha, I know you think ignorance is bliss, I remember you criticising me before Christmas for posting that the DfE messaging around school closures had changed and this indicated that school closures were now possible. You suggested that this might worry people and therefore it was better not to point it out.

Given that schools actually did close, wasn't it actually rather informing people?

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2021 10:44

Indie sage says it's to soon. How long have schools been back? It takes 2/3wks to show.

Good old Indie Sage.

If it’s too early and you want a story in media what is it - ‘cases not rising despite schools opening’ ok seems too positive for many on here.

noblegiraffe · 11/09/2021 10:44

You don't care enough about the truth, KingsleyShacklebolt, to actually check any 'facts' that you confidently spout before you spout them. You don't mind making things up if it supports your opinion.

Thanks for clarifying.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 11/09/2021 10:45

Also, I would think (and no I haven't got statistics to back it up and can't be arsed looking) that there is not one single person in the UK who isn't aware of Covid and knows what it is. We've had 18 months of constant Covid messaging. We know it's out there, and is always going to be out there.

We don't need messaging about every single covid case any more than we need messaging about every single case of any other illness.

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2021 10:46

Giraffe really? I can’t remember saying that surprised you can.

My main point on Christmas was setting precedent via councils wasn’t good.

And you’re wrong re ignorance I just choose non emotive media. Eg prefer More or Less analysis or other science programmes on radio rather than anxiety click bait of most media.

Whatever.

You clearly find it hard to accept that a lot of us aren't as obsessed with covid risks as you are.

Perhaps I'll make the effort to pop onto a tennis forum just to tell them I have absolutely no interest in tennis.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 11/09/2021 10:51

Is there an us4tennis forum?

Wizzbangfizz · 11/09/2021 10:53

This with bells on.

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2021 10:54

People are interested in not being bombarded with Covid stories though. Hence the posts.

Others miss them but they’ll have to go to easy to find dashboards and not get news leads tg.

Hellotoallmyfans · 11/09/2021 10:54

If the numbers of people dying are low and vaccines are working we need things to return to normal now.

That means only those who are ill staying home. What is the point of testing anymore in that case?

Why are you obsessing over numbers?

I don't care how many people in my dcs schools have covid, so long as it is a mild illness (by this I mean they are not hospitalised or dying).

Time to move on now - the government have said this. We cannot eradicate covid so we have to mitigate the risks and carry on with life. Obsessing over the numbers of people who have a virus is a pointless exercise.

CyclingIsNotOuting · 11/09/2021 10:55

No idea here either.
3 of DC’s class have been out this week.
I could tell by the absence report they weren't “Covid related” at this stage but they may be waiting for test results.

I don’t think school have to inform us anymore.

My school are not informing parents of any positive cases. The kids know whose positive though and tell each other so word gets out that way to kids who talk to each other.

I wish we did tell parents, as we have well over 10 cases in year 11. I want the parents of year 11 to have that knowledge so they can perhaps PCR test their own child as a close contact, or keep their child at home if someone in the house is particularly vulnerable (parent undergoing chemo for example). The in school LFTs found a few cases but more have been found as kids develop symptoms. 2 in my class had a negative LFT in the morning then a positive PCR in the evening after they started coughing mid afternoon.

Kiduknot · 11/09/2021 11:03

Having been in a classroom this week, with a child with positives at home, it’s still very much on my mind. Not worry for me. I’ve already had covid, caught at school, but I’m worried about transmitting it to my elderly parents. Obviously knowing about the child this week, I will avoid my parents for the next while.

Surely this is why there should be transparency? So people can make choices about who they see and risk asses more accurately.

A school that reports numerous cases might mean that people act more cautiously than a school with no reported cases. Surely that’s common sense?
However given people’s needs to bury their heads in the sand, on here. I think I’m alone in looking out for the more vulnerable.
I know it’s government okay’d to send in a child with positives at home, but morally I think it’s crap. If my household has positives I would self isolate all of us. Why risk transmitting it further? I’ll do my best to play my part in stopping the spread. And yes I think people are selfish, in choosing not to do the same. Legal or not.

DumplingsAndStew · 11/09/2021 11:09

@Watapalava

They’re probs my waiting

Ons study from March proved that when followed up by PCR almost 60% were false positive

Many refused to do them in our school

Hi can you please link to this ons study? Thanks.

Funnily enough the same posters who don't care about infections and schools because they're doing the fingers in ears and over eyes thing, seem to care about an awful lot of things on MN that arguably have far less to do with them!

noblegiraffe · 11/09/2021 11:12

Giraffe really? I can’t remember saying that surprised you can.

See e.g. your post here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/a4110573-No-longer-a-national-priority-to-keep-schools-open?msgid=102760690#102760690

You called the speculation 'ramping up fear'. Well, actually it was true, wasn't it?

Geamhradh · 11/09/2021 11:14

@DumplingsAndStew
I'd be interested in seeing this too. I can link to the studies showing almost 50% of negative LFTs are thought to be false negatives though. Wink

FfrothiCoffi · 11/09/2021 11:14

I care about the infections in our school, and we get that info. I don’t care about infection rates in other schools, it doesn’t affect us.
