Worried about teen getting long COVID

Covid is rife in our area. My DD is 15 so not able to have vaccine (yet).
I'm not overly worried about her getting covid but more worried about long COVID as I'm hearing more and more accounts of this recently.
Does your teen have long covid?

I have 3 teenage offspring.
Supposedly 50% of teens have already had wild covid infection.
We (they) don't know any teens who have had Covid. So presumably, it was entirely uneventful when they did have it.

Seems rather low risk to me.

Make sure he is taking proper vit d supplements which protect him generally (even if Covid didn't exist). His immune system is the key

Nettleskeins · 10/09/2021 20:07

Sorry, she not he. Even more important ...folate and anaemia and d3 insufficiency rife in teenage girls

happinessisfoundingin · 10/09/2021 23:25

@Nettleskeins - will do.
She was taking vitD spray at its height during lockdown but not recently. I give her iron supplements anyway as she has heavy periods.

I've never heard of a teen in real life having long covid, I've only heard it mentioned on here. I occasionally hear people say 'X had it last year and still isn't right..' and it's always over 50's and a 3rd hand story.

So no, I'm not worried about it, I personally recovered fully after about 2 weeks.

I forgot someone earlier.... nephew's cousin (athletic guy) caught covid in mid 2020, at about age 19 & felt tired & breathless for months afterwards. Like you would after a mystery virus infection. My parents don't have update on him. I imagine fully recovered by now.

Relatively the chances of her developing long COVID are very very low OP.

There's some evidence to suggest overexertion during recovery could be a risk factor, so I would just say if she does have a positive test make sure she takes it easy.

My 15yo dd caught covid in June. She was fine, she's had worse colds. The only lasting symptom is her taste buds have changed. Oddly she has gone off chocolate, meat, fish and coffee and says they taste wierd.

poshme · 12/09/2021 17:50

I know about 15 teens who've had it. Most of them had a heavy cold for a few days and then fully recovered. I don't know any teenagers with long covid.

DD13 felt sick for a morning, then lost smell. Nothing else. Smell now coming back after a month.

I think it's not worth worrying about. If it happens it happens.

bluejelly · 12/09/2021 22:03

Long Covid I'd extremely rare in young people. I imagine it's more dangerous crossing the road.

bluejelly · 12/09/2021 22:03

*is not I'd

I think the best you can do is try and encourage your DD to stay safe. So mask wearing and avoiding crowds in the hope of not catching Covid in the first place.

My DS has long Covid and I cried today as i've just had a message to say it will be another 11 weeks before we're even given an appointment at the Long Covid clinic. That'll be 51 weeks since he first saw the doctor!

He was a very sporty 15 year old who's had to cope with all this in his GCSE year. Now starting sixth form with chronic fatigue, joint pain & brain fog (plus other niggles) and no end in sight. It's heartbreaking.
