Is this a terrible idea

I'm looking for some advice from those who have had covid please.

I'm on day 6 of isolation today. It ends at midnight on Friday. My ds is due to go off to uni on 25th September and we had a trip planned that had to be postponed due to my positive test. I'm trying to work out if we can fit the trip in and still give him 10
Days potential isolation time (hoping he doesn't need it obviously) before he leaves. That would mean going on the trip on Saturday when my isolation had just finished.

Thinking about the way you felt after isolation ended, would you have been able to go on a trip (hours drive, two hours train, walking around during the day) the day your isolation ended? Or did you still feel unwell and tired?

Are you in the UK? If you've both been double jabbed you don't need to isolate if you're a contact. If you've actually got COVID it's a different story and I can't advise. If you haven't been jabbed, please reconsider your decision.

gildalily · 05/09/2021 07:22

Yes I am double jabbed and I do actually have covid at the moment and I'll be isolating until midnight Friday.

I definitely wouldn't consider going anywhere until my isolation period is over.

It's more reply as to whether I'll feel up to having a weekend away from Saturday after having covid. Just looking for other's experiences of if they felt wiped out even after isolation.

My friend had it about 4 weeks ago, and even now she feels wiped out.
She’s back at work but it takes everything out of her.

gildalily · 05/09/2021 07:25

@GoodnightGrandma ok, thanks. That's interesting to know. I did wonder if it would be the case. Thanks.

I felt 'wiped out' for about 3 weeks. I'm still not quite back to 100% now and I got it 10 weeks ago. Can you do the trip anyway and just take rest breaks if you need them?

FlagsFiend · 05/09/2021 07:35

How are you feeling at the moment? I still felt pretty awful on day 6 and would definitely not have been up to going anywhere the day after isolation finished. I would have struggled doing your suggested plan a month after covid to be honest. But everyone is different, so you might be fine...

OK. I didn't think you were about to break the isolation rulesSmile Just wasn't sure what your situation was, as I personally felt awful just having to isolate as a contact, did a real number on my MH. Hope you recover soon and get to mark this milestone in your son's life!
Alpenguin · 05/09/2021 07:47

Took me almost a year to be able to do anything like that after covid. I had it mild allegedly.

Lostinacloud · 05/09/2021 07:50

Surely it depends on how badly you are feeling at the moment? I felt unwell between day 2-5 but only very mild - very similar to a 3 day hangover. By day 7 I felt pretty much fully recovered so this kind of trip will have been fine for me on day 10. However, as some people have said above, if it totally wipes you out for ten days or more then perhaps you won’t be feeling like it.

HarrietOh · 05/09/2021 07:51

I was absolutely fine after 5-6 days so my last 9 days of isolation were torture when it was 14 days (I only really had a headache though with covid) so completely differs from person to person.

gildalily · 05/09/2021 07:53

Thanks everyone. This is really helpful. I don't want to curse it by saying so but at the moment I'm not too bad. I have been taking it very easy though so maybe if I was exerting myself I might feel different. Thanks. It sounds as though I need to wait until midweek in case anything changes.

The people who've had covid in my house were all itching to get out by the end of the isolation period and definitely could have done big days out the day after isolation ended. I imagine this will vary from person to person though.

However they were all feeling pretty well by day 6. How are you feeling now? If you feel ok then you'll probably be ok to do the trip?

gildalily · 05/09/2021 08:05

Thanks @HipHopBanzai that's good to know too. I'm very much hoping that I'll follow the path of your family but I know it's not a given! So far I'm feeling ok. Finger's crossed.

I don't think others can answer this for you...it's like asking how unwell people were with Covid. Some had no symptoms, others needed to be ventilated. How long is a piece of string? Fingers crossed you feel better soon!

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 05/09/2021 08:36

You don’t mention anything about how ill you actually are? Or how your general health was previously? This is surely the biggest determining factor in your recovery?

Given that the range of severity of symptoms of “infection” seems to range from being so mild that you don’t even know you had it(!) to becoming ill enough to need hospital treatment, and then possibly post-viral syndrome, I don’t know how anyone can possibly predict this for you?!

The isolation period is to reduce the chances that you’ll pass on the viruses to others. It’s not a set period of recuperation time Hmm

Porcupineintherough · 05/09/2021 08:43

Me- absolutely not. My dh - yes, no problem. So it is totally an individual thing. If you feel ok now and are not getting worse then it should be fine.

amymorris01 · 05/09/2021 08:49

My DH had it a couple of weeks ago he is double jabbed and he wasnt too bad at all, I didnt catch it off him so I was lucky. He wnt straight but to work when the 10 days were up because he felt fine but its how you feel to be honest.

Imnothereforthedrama · 05/09/2021 08:55

I couldn’t wait to get out of the house after isolating , so you do what you want to do as long as you don’t have symptoms and feel well then no reason you can’t go anywhere after 10 days .

BoomChicka · 05/09/2021 09:48

I went to a music festival the day after my isolation ended, had a great day but was very very tired the day after, but manageable. Everyone is different though!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/09/2021 11:19

I was feeling fine by the end of isolation so I would have done it.

AlixandraTheGreat · 05/09/2021 12:51

I was just about to say @Waxonwaxoff0 will be along any moment to tell you that she has just had Covid, and as it was a mere mild cold she could manage a month's rough hike in Spain - but she beat me.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/09/2021 12:54

God no, I don't do hiking. Wink
Beefmeupscotty · 05/09/2021 12:58

DH could have, kids could have, I couldn't. All depends on how you're feeling now I guess.

gildalily · 05/09/2021 14:00

Thanks all. I'm hearing that basically I won't know until nearer the time. Thanks for all the input.

I think it depends how fit and healthy you are usually as to how quickly you bounce back, how are you after flu, or stomach bugs etc? I think it also depends on your mentality. I’m very much a get on with it kind of person whereas some spend a week in bed for the slightest sniffle, only you will know OP.
