Don’t know what to do

Ds tested positive with a PCR yesterday. He has all the symptoms and feeling understandable poorly. He was away for the weekend and got pinged on Tuesday. He has had to self isolate due to only having one vaccine. All of his lateral flow tests have been negative.

I started feeling poorly yesterday. I am double vaccinated. I had a headache, sore throat, runny nose and a cough. I took a PCR yesterday and the results came back at 5am negative. I have woken with loss of taste and smell. As I have another symptom do I need another PCR? Lateral flow test this morning negative.

Personally I would go for another PCR. With those symptoms and a partner who has tested positive, I wouldn't be relying on the results of the lateral flow test.

It may be you took the test incorrectly or slightly too early. If possible do another PCR - but it sounds pretty likely you have it and therefore if it was me I would isolate.

Will your work understand?

Northernsoullover · 03/09/2021 07:41

It sounds like you have covid. Sad

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 07:42

The trouble with any of these close contact tests is they rely on timing. If done too early, they may not pick up the infection. Don't rely on LFTs. I had three negatives before getting a positive PCR. Wait a day , if you can, and then have another PCR. What a pain for you. Hope you and DS stay reasonably well.

Twilightstarbright · 03/09/2021 07:46

I’d test again. DH initially tested negative when DS and I tested positive, but two days later he was positive too.

VaccineSticker · 03/09/2021 08:16

You did the pcr too early. There was another lady on here with the same scenario few days ago. Kept testing negative as her symptoms went worse with time, then finally she tested positive with a pcr.

I expect this to be repeated in most house holds. Close contacts are testing early to return to work, as they would, getting a negative, then finding out 5 days later that they were positive all along meaning they have infected more people.
The whole thing is wrong.
You have lost you sense of smell and taste and live with a positive case. Your work would be nuts to have you back unless they fancy losing more people from their team. Grin

Does your workplace have any rules about it? Mine doesn't want me in if I'm at all unwell. Which is tricky as I always seem to be unwell!

IWasBornInAThunderstorm · 03/09/2021 08:22

But yes I'd do another PCR test. Even if work insist you go in.

Siameasy · 03/09/2021 09:14

I definitely would test. The loss of smell was a unique thing. Normally with a cold I’ve lost my smell due to being stuffed up. With Covid I lost my smell but both nostrils were clear and the loss was complete so it was really unnerving

Aquamarine1029 · 03/09/2021 09:16

My daughter had covid, for the second time, 2 weeks ago. Her first 2 tests were negative. You need to be retested.

Spottyphonecase24 · 03/09/2021 09:49

Thanks everyone. I’ve booked another PCR for tomorrow.

Work aren’t being that great to be honest. I know if I told them that my test was negative they would demand I come in. I’ve told them I have more symptoms so I won’t be in and I will let them know when I have received my results. I haven’t told them I have received my results. I have my laptop so I’m working from home so they can’t whinge too much. I would never forgive myself if I do I have it and passed it on.

Just tell them your original test was inconclusive if you need to delay them

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/09/2021 14:29

I’d do what the last poster says - say it was inconclusive and you need to re test.

The thing is, you’re ill either way, so surely can’t go in to work?
