Is there a way to have the second dose earlier than 8 weeks?

My dad passed away today morning..I’m in pieces snd not sure what to do. I’m single jabbed and the next appointment is not until early Oct- is there any way I can have this earlier - maybe in 6 weeks so I can travel when the restrictions lift in my country?

I have a call booked in with the gp tomorrow but has anyone done this? I had Pfizer

It depends on where your are in the country. The majority of our school staff where vaccinated with only a 4 week window (AZ and Pfizer) when we had vaccine buses pulling up outside high schools. This happened across Manchester and Bolton (where DP teaches).

@Whyarewehardofthinking I’m in the east of England- there are walk in centres etc but most of them do indicate 8 weeks. However the site I had my 1st dose didn’t indicate this so will try the same place is the plan

Hopefully the gp letter will help..

If s as stone has any experience going to a walk in in 7 weeks and successfully getting the jab could you please let me know how you managed it? Was it easy and straightforward or did you have to go back at the end of the say for example?

I’m trying to get it done in the same place I had my first jab as it helps with my anxiety around this..known location etc.

Sorey I haven't rtft.

I had a message 4 weeks after having my first pfizer jab saying I could book my second for then. It was a case of cancelling 2nd jab appt and booking new one in.

FeelingJittery1 · 03/09/2021 11:26

@cantthinkofanythingwitty whereabouts are you? I’m east of England but next week is my fourth week so maybe there is a chance?

I am in the SW, I just received a txt message through from the NHS

Name12341 · 03/09/2021 12:15

The vaccine center I had my second at had a sign saying 'if it has not been 8 weeks since your first vaccination you will not be able to get your second today. If this means you are at risk of not getting your second please phone this number'
Afraid I don't know the number but you may be able to find it to contact and say you will be in a different country when your second is due so unless you have it now you won't be able to? Hopefully that might get it braught forwards?

Name12341 · 03/09/2021 12:18

If the walk in vaccination center near you doesn't have the same signs I would think a staff member would be able to find the number for you to call

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 03/09/2021 12:52

Just looked. I had 1st jab on 1st July and received the txt 24th July

Up until recently, it was possible to have the second Pfizer around 4 weeks later. However, this has been stopped and now vaccination centres turn away people if it hasn’t been 8 weeks. I see you’ve spoken to your GP so hopefully you’ll be able together yours early

This is the case at the one I work at. Only brought forward now with a medical reason. I've had to turn loads of people away, even a couple of days short of 8 weeks.
Howshouldibehave · 03/09/2021 17:13

My DS (19) had his second at a walk in centre 6 weeks after his first, a couple of weeks ago. They didn’t mention anything about 8 weeks.

AmIbeingTreasonable · 03/09/2021 21:03

Why have they made it 8 weeks between doses? Is it so more people can get a first dose?

Cookerhood · 03/09/2021 21:27

Originally it was 12 weeks to enable more people to get a first dose when there was limited supply. They have since realised that a longer dose is better for efficacy but reduced it from 12 weeks to 8 in a race against Delta.

mibbelucieachwell · 03/09/2021 22:09

My DS got his first vaccination in England, second in Scotland exactly six weeks later to meet the entry requirements for a one off short course in Europe.

He was recommended to ask his Scottish GP who confirmed he was happy with a six week gap, but from an admin pov was nothing to do with him.

PrpleRain · 04/09/2021 05:04

My dad has got a terminal cancer and he lives in a different country. I begged my gp for an earlier dose so that I could fly and see him but they wouldn’t let me have it.
Eventually I got an invite for the second dose which I accepted. When I got to the vaccination centre they told me that my first dose was 7 weeks 6 days ago so not exactly 8 weeks and they have to call somewhere to get approvals. They did give it to me in the end but said that they would just sent me home if the gap between the doses was 7 weeks 5 days. 🤷🏼‍♀️

mibbelucieachwell · 04/09/2021 10:26

Prplerain that's awful. I hope you manage to see your DF.

FeelingJittery1 · 04/09/2021 12:13

@PrpleRain sorry to hear about your dad.

It feels like a hit and miss.. I’ll go to the centre in two weeks time that’ll be 5 weeks and 4 days and see if I can get it

OP posts:
FeelingJittery1 · 04/09/2021 12:38

Only concern is if it’ll be ‘useless’ if I get it too early..

OP posts:
FeelingJittery1 · 04/09/2021 12:39

And scared of the side effects/adverse effects as it is..so not sure if it’ll be worse if I get it early. I think a poster said this wasn’t the case..
