TT&P have extended my isolation period

Is this normal?

I tested positive on Wednesday 25th August and once it was confirmed by a PCR I was told to isolate for 11 days up to midnight on 4th Sept. The app says I have 7 days left (including today).

Test Track and Protect finally called me today and asked about my symptoms. I told them I had a sore throat and cold like symptoms on the day I was pinged (Tuesday) but didn't get any of the three main symptoms until about the Friday (27th) - two days after testing positive.

Because of this they have extended my isolation period to midnight on 6th September meaning I will be isolating for 13 days.

I did call back and ask them, if I had been lucky enough to not get any of the three main symptoms at all would that mean I would have to isolate forever?

I totally get that I am doing this so others are safe but given that they believe my exposure was two days before I was pinged (8 days ago) and I haven't been out of the house since Monday, I can't understand why I need to have the isolation period changed?!

Presumably they are aware that the vaccines mean that people often won't get bad symptoms and some people don't get any of the three main ones at all!

If you develop symptoms during your isolation period ( and didn’t have them before, I.e asymptomatic test was positive) your 10 days resets from the day you got symptoms. People who never get symptoms do their ten days and that’s it.

this is not something I have read anywhere.
Even on the App.

The Welsh guidance says I may be asked to isolate for more than ten days if I have a particular strain but TT&P are unable to give me a that info.

I had this and I was told by 119 that I only needed to extend my isolation if I still had a temperature, sneezing or D&V by Day 10. There's so much conflicting information!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/08/2021 20:00

I'm in England though, just realised you're in Wales so guidance may be different.

whiteonesugar · 29/08/2021 20:28

I didn’t know either but there was a thread about this earlier today - might be different in Wales though.

NHS website says - If you get symptoms while you're self-isolating, the 10 days restarts from the day after your symptoms started.

Yea ‘if you do not have symptoms’ but if you do start getting them it restarts.

I had no idea about this until someone posted about it today.

Op read what's written under what you've underlined in yellow

TheSunnySide · 29/08/2021 21:28

Yeah I do get it,

It's just that I didn't have the three main symptoms (have never had a temperature but am menopausal so probably wouldn't notice) so apparently all the lesser ones don't count for isolation purposes.

I feel like I have had it all - a ping, a whole load of other symptoms, very vague coughing and loss of smell and now I a, stuck here for even longer. It frustrates me that the Welsh guidance says

"If you do not have any symptoms but have tested positive, you must self-isolate for at least 10 days, starting from the day after you took the test. you may have to self isolate for longer (up to 14 days) if you have certain variants of the virus. TTP will let you know if this is the case'" but no one has been able to tell me what strain I have.

Anyway - I get it, I really do, I was just extremely upset when I found out I will be stuck in for even longer. Very difficult doing this as a single parent.

It’s bollocks really, I’m sorry you’re in this situation!

sproutsandparsnips · 29/08/2021 21:44

So, I read that as if you are isolating because of contact, and you develop symptoms and go on to test positive then your isolation starts again the day you symptoms do. If you test positive without symptoms then your isolation starts from the positive test and is not extended unless, once 10 days are up, you still have a fever, d or v etc (not cough or loss of taste or smell as they can be ongoing).

sproutsandparsnips · 29/08/2021 21:47

Ie if you develop symptoms after the positive test no need to extend isolation, the 10 days starts from the positive test and is not extended.

TheSunnySide · 29/08/2021 21:55

Yes, that was how I read it initially.

This has happened to my dd too! T&T said their software is giving 12 day isolation periods and the call handler couldn’t say why. He agreed we should stick to 10. Very odd???

Initially I was given an 8 day isolation period by the tracker because I was a contact of a known case (it didn't seem to get that as a double jabbed person I didn't have to isolate at all) That is partly why I ended up sending off for a PCR (also had a sore throat). As soon as I logged my positive PCR it went from 8 days to 11 which seemed odd given that it would normally be 10. Now it is 13. I am so blooming' confused.

Happened to me. They contacted me on day 8 or 9 of isolation, just to check up. I stupidly told them in passing I'd developed a cough a few days earlier (none of the 3 classic symptoms up to that point, had been headache & blocked nose). Isolation was extended for 4 days. Annoying. Wished I hadn't said anything but I'm able to wfh so just completed the extra days.

TheSunnySide · 29/08/2021 22:38

And yet it ridiculously says all of the following online.

They don't recognise a runny nose and sneezing as a symptom at the beginning, but it does matter if it happens at the end. And a cough is ok after 10 days but not before.

When to stop self-isolating
You can stop self-isolating after the 10 days if either:
• you do not have any symptoms
• you just have a cough or changes to your sense of smell or taste – these can last for weeks after the infection has gone
When to keep self-isolating
Keep self-isolating if you have any of these symptoms after the 10 days:
• a high temperature or feeling hot and shivery
• a runny nose or sneezing
• feeling or being sick
• diarrhoea

brownmouser · 29/08/2021 22:52

Oh well spotted - that is mad. So you can’t get a test for sneezing and a cold (which is how ours started) but you have to keep isolating if you get one! Such fuckery.
