South west mitigation plan??

chairfoxlight · 27/08/2021 22:22

I live in the south west and have seen lots of the media outlets talking about a 5 week mitigation plan in the area due to high cases. Can't find much info on what this means except masks back in schools.

Is this a thing? Has it happened elsewhere, if so - what does it look like? Are we going to back toward regional / tier type restrictions?

Live in sw too but not heard anything , lots of holiday makers made cases high and seems a lot in my ds ages 15-18 at moment in my area

SW too and haven"t heard anything about this yet. Our case numbers are high but I'm wondering if our rates per 100k are accurate. I'm assuming its calculated on permanent resident population so won't take into account the increased population size during the summer which would make the cases per 100k lower than reported.
It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the summer holidays.

Have seen this on the news but can’t see exactly what plan of action it is.. watching with interest/trepidation.

That's a really good point actually. We might be the only area where cases go down when kids go back to school!

Devonlive where reporting this. Not a trusted news outlet though.

Didn’t say what the plans would be, was woolly to be honest.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/08/2021 10:36

Live in the SW. I think once people go home after the summer things will improve.

Closing down all second homes and Air BnB lets would be a start if restrictions were to be imposed locally.

PuzzledObserver · 28/08/2021 13:34

This is what Devon County Council are saying. Won’t make much difference to how we’re living.

I’m Somerset and our cases are rising fast.

I’ve seen that Cornish schools will have to wear masks in communal areas but nothing official and nothing here yet.

It’s bringing a tier system back again. Surely all schools should have masks as they’ve possibly recently travelled to high risk areas 😳 Look at Boardmasters, Reading etc will all be the same I’m sure and right when schools head back.

HesterShaw1 · 28/08/2021 13:48

There is nothing being said about tiered restrictions. And bloody good luck if they try introducing those Hmm.

They are talking about masks in schools. They can try that but it won't make a difference. Once the kids have mostly had it and the tourists have mostly gone home, that will make the difference. No area can get away with not being hit, including the south west.

@newnortherner111

Do you honestly think that would have a discernible effect on the levels of infection circulating among the local population down here, or would it simply look like an anti-tourist bit of spite?
Bennetgirl · 28/08/2021 15:06

It is tiered, it’s not one rule for all. Like last time it’s one rule for the worst effected tiers.

Surely if it’s official it should come from Boris??

No, of course not. Boris does not want to be associated with admitting that things CAN go backwards until he absolutely has to.

So these things are coming out in dribs and drabs from different sources, gradually including restrictions (masks in communal areas in schools; restricted hospital visiting etc etc) in a piecemeal way without 'the Government' having to admit yet that yes, restrictions will have to be re-imposed sometimes in response to rising Covid numbers.
