Should my mum come or not?

Hi all, my mum's 82 and CEV. She's planning to come and stay with us this weekend, we decided it was the safest time with the kids off school and our having been very careful in recent weeks.

Today I was in a very small food shop and a man not wearing a mask came in and sneezed twice without covering his mouth. I and my children left asap but we had to pass him to get out.

Now I and my mum are in a quandary about Saturday! I think the rates are currently 1 in 60 so there's a 1 in 60 chance of him having Covid, it could have been harmless sneezing or it could have been symptoms, who knows.

I don't know what it takes to pick up the Delta variant, we weren't in his vicinity for more than a few seconds but sneezes directly carry viruses.

WWYD??

I'd have my Mam to stay. The chances are everyone but you child has been double vaccinated.

ACreakingGateNeverStops · 26/08/2021 17:59

He might have had hayfever or just a cold. 1 in 60 risk isn't spread evenly. Some areas will be 1 in 10 others 1 in 200. Statistics can be a very blunt tool.

If I were you I'd try and relax and enjoy having your mum to stay

Ask your DMum - unless you think/know she lacks capacity.

Is she fully vaccinated? Is she immune compromised - it's only a subset of the CEV for whom the vaccine may not work

ApolloandDaphne · 26/08/2021 18:07

People who don't have Covid still sneeze. I do as does my DD. We are sneezy people. I would still have her come to see you.

Walkerby · 26/08/2021 18:38

Thank you all. Her CEV is not immunity based, but she was also one of the first to be vaccinated (December 2020) so I’m concerned about waning immunity too. Honestly, am so cross at this guy, it’s one thing not wearing a mask but another to openly sneeze in an enclosed space with other people in it without any attempt to cover his mouth - twice!! I wish I’d said something but I’m too nice!!!

Even if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic that would be bad enough!

I’d always be overly cautious to avoid having to deal with the ‘if only we hadn’t’ scenario

BritWifeInUSA · 27/08/2021 05:01

I would. 82 and CEV? This could be the last time you see her. Spend as much time with her as you can whilst you still have the opportunity. I’m sure she’d love that too.

Walkerby · 27/08/2021 20:38

Thank you everyone 🙏🙏🙏

I'd let your mum make the choice.

Equally, at 82 and CEV, you could be thinking "if only we had....

Is this a joke?

Do people honestly think it's acceptable to even consider saying something to someone for sneezing. This is unbelievable, sneezing is allowed you know.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 27/08/2021 22:27

It's disgusting to sneeze around other people without covering your mouth. Gross.

Anyway - OP, wait until the last minute then do a LFT.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 27/08/2021 22:28

I mean, you'd say something if someone was spitting around you. Well, I would.

Should my mum come or not?
CyclingIsNotOuting · 27/08/2021 22:32

Your mum should come.
Keep doing the LFT’s for reassurance but sneezing isn’t a covid symptom and life is too short.

Indigokitten · 27/08/2021 22:35

Unfortunately my hay fever has affected my asthma and I’ve been sneezing lots and coughing lots. But none are due today Covid

LouLou198 · 28/08/2021 07:08

Just to reassure you, when all 4 of us had Covid I didn't hear anyone sneeze once.

SpringRainbow · 28/08/2021 07:12

Tbh this would even register with me.

However, I think ultimately this is up to your mother to decide what she wants to do.
