Dry / sore eyes with covid?

Has anyone else had this and how long did it take for the eyes to go back to normal? Did anything help recover?

I developed dry eyes on day ten and have had them for a week now. (I’m double vaccinated btw).

Any advice would be so much appreciated. Thank you!

Not had dry eyes with Covid but did have them with Bells' Palsy. Get some Hylo Gel, it's brilliant stuff, really helped my eyes. It doesn't have preservatives in it. Hope you get better soon.

MrsFin · 25/08/2021 22:18

I have dry eyes, but not because of Covid. Hylo-Tear is good, as is Boots own brand.

I'm getting a test tomorrow and my eyes are killing me. You can get preservative free eye drops. Have to say that proper eye drops with the doctor and not just from pharmacy is all that has given me proper relief in the past.

What did the sore eyes feel like?

I have something similar to conjunctivitis now and was wondering if the cold-type symptoms I had recently were Covid. Is Covid linked to sore eyes?

Tealightsandd · 26/08/2021 00:22

Agree - get preservative free eyedrops. My cousin has bad dry eyes and he uses an ointment at night (I don't know the name, sorry). He also uses a heated wheat bag on his eyes.

Omega 3 can help (fish is a good source or, if you're vegetarian/vegan, flaxseed). Turmeric too, as it's an anti inflammatory. (Covid is an inflammatory disease, and dry eye is often linked to inflammation.)

I hope your eyes feel less sore soon OP.

I’m on my second Covid infection and both times I’ve had sore eyes (never had anything like it before). The first time the soreness went as soon as I was feeling better.

AlanisMorningShed · 26/08/2021 00:58

Sore eyes was one of my first symptoms.

I am a month post covid and double vaxxed, yet my eyes still flare up when I feel run down

Thanks very much for the responses. I had an eye exam at specsavers last week and have been using hycosan extra which they suggested but it’s not helping noticeably - unless i need to use a lot more than I have been (1-2 drops per eye a few times a day)? My mum’s boots hypromellose eye drops have helped more but still wish I could resolve this. Maybe the hylo gel or hylo tear would be better or an ointment?

I’ll try the omega fatty acids and turmeric.

In terms of what it feels like, it’s totally new to me - at first felt very sore and like I couldn’t open my eyes properly and was straining them. My eyelids seemed slightly inflamed and any sun glare seemed to irritate eyes more. Now it’s feeling better with less obvious inflammation and I can open my eyes most of the way but still they feel a bit dry and straining.

It is one of the many symptoms, yes. I had conjunctivitis when I had what I suspect was Covid last March.

I had what I think was Covid end of Dec 2019 into Jan 2020 (still disputed that it was around that early) and have had very dry sore eyes since. I initially thought it was linked to menopause but not so sure now.

I use Hycosan night ointment which seems to beat the daytime one I have (Systane). It varies day to day, I can have a run of two weeks where I can't wear makeup then the odd day when I can. Hope this helps.

Siameasy · 26/08/2021 10:56

Yes I’ve got Covid now and this has been a symptom. Had to stop watching TV as it really hurt

MrsFin · 26/08/2021 17:16

Xailin eye gel for night time - put out in your eyes just before you go to sleep.

MrsFin · 26/08/2021 17:18

And 1-2 drops of any eye drops isn't enough. When my eyes are bad I use drops copiously - every couple of hours.
Do you use a pc a lot? That won't help because you don't move your eyes much. Ditto mob phone etc.

Bubbublish · 26/08/2021 17:28

I've been out of hospital for nearly a week now and woke up this morning with my eyes stuck together, I'm guessing conjunctivitis but not sure if it's covid related coz it's only just started or just that I'm very run down and my body has been through a trauma! Eyes have been sore all day and watery

cakeflower · 26/08/2021 21:33

Thanks all. @Bubbublish I believe conjunctivitis is a known symptom associated with covid. Hope you and @Siameasyfeel better soon.

@MrsFin thanks - good to know. I have been using eye drops loads today. I do use screens which I know doesn’t help but the thing that has changed is having covid.
