I’ve got Covid, is there anything I can do to keep it mild?

PCR test results back as positive during the night. I’m isolating in my bedroom away from DH and DS. Got a cough and feel tired but no fever at the moment.

Is there anything I can do to keep it mild, or is it completely out of my hands?

I’m CEV due to autoimmune disease and the medications I take.

I’m double vaccinated.

I’m not sure there is anything you can actually do to keep it mild as it depends on your body’s own response to the virus. Being double jabbed should reduce the severity of the illness. Stay calm, drink plenty of fluids, eat little and often, monitor your temp/symptoms and rest a lot. Take paracetamol at regular intervals.

You may find it helps to have a little notebook where you write how you feel each day? It can help you monitor any worsening of symptoms.

Best wishes OP for a quick and full recovery xx

With any illness like this it is very important to rest a lot and not try and do your normal chores and exercise, this is especially important when you start to feel better as that is when people tend to overdo it.

hellcatspangle · 25/08/2021 06:24

FWIW I know several people double jabbed who've had it recently and they've all recovered quickly - a couple of them felt really rough for 24 hours (stay in bed rough) but were fine after that, and some just felt mildly unwell for a week or so. Just keep hydrated, take meds if you need them (I recommend day/night nurse) and rest up. Get well soon 💐

I've heard positive reviews from friends who've actually just tried good old fashioned immune boosting tactics - lots of garlic (1-2 cloves a day), high strength vitamin C and D. It's worth a try!

Buy an oximeter can get them on Amazon to monitor you oxygen levels I was given one by doctor and told to go to hospital if dropped.

I packed myself with vitamins, vegetable juices and smoothies and took paracetamol as often as was allowed.

Drink lots of water.

Took about 4/5 weeks to get over it

Snorkello · 25/08/2021 06:40

Lots of water, keep the windows open, take some pain killers and cough syrup if you can. If not, have hot water with honey and lemon. Get lots of rest.

Natural remedies include turmeric, ginger and garlic. Eat healthily. Good trick for turmeric is to put it in rice when you cook it.

Hope you feel better soon!

Twilightstarbright · 25/08/2021 06:42

Thank you everyone. I’ve got a decent thermometer and oximeter.

I don’t feel too bad in myself, no worse than a nasty cold, but I worry that this is only the beginning and I’ll feel much worse in a few days.

I am CEV and double jabbed. On immunosuppressive drugs and have covid. I'm in hospital now. What I wish I had known was to double up my steroids asap. Whether that would be enough I doubt but I asked GP for advice and they didn't mention it.
Keep hydrated and ring 111 if your oxygen sats drop below 94.
Days 7 to 10 seem to be the turning point

shouldistop · 25/08/2021 09:35

If you're double vaccinated then it's very likely to be mild anyway. Get lots of rest, drink plenty of water, nutritious soup etc. my dh also swears by eating oranges and pomegranates when ill.
Open your windows for fresh air and if you feel able to, get out in the sunshine once a day.

Lindy2 · 25/08/2021 19:22

You've done what you needed to do to protect yourself by having had your vaccines.

Rest as much as possible and eat as healthily as possible. I completely lost my appetite for a week in the second week of Covid so I was glad I'd eaten well when I was still able to.

I found hot baths helped sooth all the aches and warm drinks were also nice.

I hope you recover quickly and it isn't too bad as the vaccines will help protect you.

suggestionsplease1 · 25/08/2021 19:25

Rest and allow your body to recover rather than pushing through.

MsChatterbox · 25/08/2021 19:27

Loads of water. I felt so much better when I finally hydrated myself properly.

QuarantineQueen · 25/08/2021 19:36

Lots of fluids, vitamin D. I had it last year before the vaccines - I was CV at the time but I'm now CEV due to the permanent damage to my lungs and when they tested my vitamin D levels afterwards they were very low. Caused by the covid or the cause or the covid i don't know, but either way, a good supplement is worth a try.
Rest lots. Don't try to push yourself (I ended up with long covid). Hope you are ok Flowers
Flowers for @CatAlice too, hope you are able to get home soon.

First thing don't panic. You're double jabbed so it's most likely to be mild anyway. Sitting there worrying that you're going to feel bad is a) pointless and b) psychologically counterproductive. Tell yourself you're going to be fine, remind yourself you're fighting it off. Don't focus on symptoms but keep an eye on SATS.

We've just had it. Dh felt rough for a week and I was fine. So many people I know had this even before vaccines were fine and only knew they had it because they'd done a test for work or similar, other people felt rough for a week or less.

Statistically even before vaccines it caused mild disease in 80% of cases. Risk increases with age obviously but those dying / hospitalised were really unlucky.

People in hospital now are by and large unvaccinated or elderly. I'd ignore poster's telling you it got them badly as you can't guarantee they aren't winding you up.

Think positive and rest up. The advice nit to do exercise is good. Should also get fresh air. Try cough medicine or hot drinks to stop you coughing too much otherwise that makes you feel bad in itself.

ArcheryAnnie · 25/08/2021 19:39

Rest, rest, rest. if you find yourself struggling for breath, roll over onto your front. Sleep on your front if that works for you.

But rest.

Guineapigbridge · 25/08/2021 19:44

Sunshine and fresh air whenever you can manage it.
Double jab will help.

Might be worth looking at.

Twilightstarbright · 25/08/2021 20:10

Thank you everyone. Not feeling too bad and sat in the garden for a bit which was lovely. Really trying to ignore the mess and laundry, and keep myself sat on the sofa with plenty of water.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but my husband and I both currently have covid and we've both been v poorly. We're both double jabbed.

I am on day 9 I think now and still very unwell (not hospital unwell but the worst I've felt for a very long time). Monday was my worst day but am exhausted and still coughing and breathless and dizzy and nauseous. And oh my god the bloody sneezing has been unbelievable. It's been waking me up in the night. Thankfully the sneezing seems to be easing off today.

My husband was hit first and faster and was again very poorly, bedridden with a high temperature for three days. He had severe muscle pain which wasn't touched by the painkillers. He was ill for about a week in total but is now ok and back working. He oddly didn't lose his smell until he had started feeling better.

However my friend who is CEV had it and it's had loss of taste/smell and nothing else.

I think everyone is reacting differently so just rest, have plenty of fluids and see how you go.

Fingers crossed we both feel better soon. 😊

Did either of you have low oxygen?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 18/09/2021 19:36

I think you just have to look after yourself and hope for the best.

And chew liquorice root - some evidence that it's (known) antiviral properties have a useful effect. It's far from certain that it will di any good. But it won't harm you to try it on the off chance
