If my 4yo is positive

Waiting on PCR results as he's a close contact. I know none of us have to isolate in the meantime, and if he's positive, the rest of the household will need a PCR but don't have to isolate (me and DH double jabbed, and another preschooler).

Obviously 4yo will have to isolate for 10 days. In theory DH, myself and our other pre schooler can carry on? But does that only apply if 4yo could isolate away from us (obviously not the case!)?

To be clear. I'm not proposing that we carry on 'as normal'- DH and I can work from home, the main question is whether you'd send the other preschooler to nursery? I think in theory allowed but a bit conflicted as obviously we wouldn't want to spread it/make anyone else poorly if 4yo tested positive and the younger on negative but then picked it up from 4yo later on.

I'm not sure of the official line but no I wouldnt send my pre schooler in. I would assume its highly likely they have covid if their sibling does.

Siameasy · 24/08/2021 22:46

Legally you can send the pre-schooler in. The nursery may have other policies though. It’s a moral issue. Imo it sounds like you could keep DC 2 off so I probably would.
I have Covid day 6 and DH and DD have tested negative from the start. So they have been out and about but have only been to outdoor activities. Nurseries can be very stuffy and enclosed and must be a breeding ground

Bizawit · 25/08/2021 00:03

Yes you can send you preschooler in to school. There’s no more isolation for under 18s and double vaxxed adults.

JanglyBeads · 25/08/2021 00:58

No you don’t have to keep distance from the infected household member.

Banani · 25/08/2021 06:07

We were in this position (eldest tested positive the day before the rules change) and although we didn’t have to we kept our youngest off. I was at home with the eldest anyway so it didn’t seem right to send the youngest in when I could just be home with both. In the end none of the rest of us caught it, more luck than anything though as we didn’t isolate from him.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/08/2021 06:50

You can send the pre schooler in but it's recommended you do a PCR on the rest of the household. If you can I would keep them home though. I caught Covid and DS didn't test positive until 6 days after me.

Youcanchangeyournamebut · 25/08/2021 08:39

Yes, we'll definitely all be getting PCRd if 4yo is positive.

Me and my 9 year old positive, my 2 year old hasn't picked it up at all shes tested everyday till my oldest isolation is up mine is up today, so could be a chance ur other little one won't get it at all

Youcanchangeyournamebut · 25/08/2021 09:03

@Mum32021 does your 2yo attend nursery? Have you been sending them in?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 25/08/2021 09:03

Whilst it’s legal to send the pre schooler in I personally wouldn’t and would keep them home. There are CEV children that haven’t been vaccinated and I wouldn’t want to make anyone else ill.

BlackShadowCat · 25/08/2021 09:08

This new guidance really worries me. I know a guy whose wife has Covid, he tested negative so went back to work. He works with the elderly and vulnerable. It just really bothers me. I personally wouldn’t send the youngest to nursery just to be on the safe side even though you are entitled to do so.

With PCR tests? All our lateral flow tests were negative but our PCRs were positive, that's why it's important to test with PCR if a household member is positive. LFT are very unreliable.
Youcanchangeyournamebut · 25/08/2021 09:22

It's negative- moral dilemma solved!

I guess we'll have lots of this over the next 6-9 months, the problem is if we are legally able to put the DC in childcare, our employers will expect us to do so, and work. So whilst I had holiday which I may have been able to take to cover this period, if it happened again, I wouldn't, and if it happened at a critical time I wouldn't be able to either. It's going to be interesting.

@waxonwaxoff0 it was the pcr test as well she tested negative on, I tested positive first pcr positive tested everyone else my oldest dd had positive lft and positive pcr, my dh and toddler are negative on all of them.

@youcanchangeyournamebut no she dosnt go to nursery, but if she did id probably ask what the their policy is with a positive sibling, but my dh is still working his tested on sites and tested at home

Siameasy · 25/08/2021 11:45

Yes it is difficult-I can’t work from home in my job so eg if DH had it provided I’d done a positive PCR I’d be going into work because I’d be penalised if I didn’t
Most people will have run out of leave as we head towards the end of the year too

OK, was just wondering as sometimes people use LFT thinking they're accurate but they've been pretty crap in my experience! If I had just relied on LFT with DS then he'd have been spreading Covid everywhere as it was only his PCR that was positive.

I work in a nursery. Many of our staff are young and have only recently had the first vaccine. So far since guidelines changed we've had two children in whose parents have tested positive. Parents following guidelines by getting others to bring children in. Morally I wouldn't, and I worry for the staff but there's nothing the nurserys can do about it. Due to confidentiality, we can't even tell the workers that the child is living in household with Covid.
