Covid in kids

1 week into the new school term and covid is raging through DS primary school. At least 4 confirmed cases in his class alone and I'm sure he has it too (LFT showing feint line, we are having PCR tomorrow). He's ok, some mild symptoms but I'm so sad about it. We're trying to keep some distance in the house, separate towels etc. But he's my baby and I just want to snuggle up with him. I'm not sure why I'm posting really, I thought things were starting to be ok but this is clearly going to tear through the school and they are all still so young

@Noshowwithoutpunch

Yes, some dc are very ill with it.. My 11 year old ds for one. On the whole, kids are fine though, so we can just skim over the few that suffer.
I’m sorry your DS was ill, hope he’s feeling better now. I have a child who was hospitalised with chicken pox (my other 2 sailed through it), and another who suffered for months after a bout of hand, foot and mouth. Sadly some children do get more ill with some viruses than others.

I'm wondering what the school are doing about it?

In all seriousness, what can the school do about it?

noblegiraffe · 25/08/2021 09:47

If it's Scotland, then I suspect more than England.

Following the government rules - so opening an extra window if they have one and asking the caretaker to do an extra clean perhaps

And what good do you think that will do?

Neverrains · 25/08/2021 09:59

Our school are sticking with the same mitigations from last year. Teachers masked, parents masked on school run, staggered starts and finishes, bubbles etc.

Well, quite. Probably as much use as it did last year to be honest.
Neverrains · 25/08/2021 10:15

Schools are free to put in extra mitigations though aren’t they? Ours has.

noblegiraffe · 25/08/2021 10:18

Depends on if you've got litigious parents. There are parents out there threatening legal action against schools who put in extra mitigations.

Not to mention the people who call heads child abusers on twitter for asking secondary kids to wear masks.

Neverrains · 25/08/2021 10:19

The parents at our school seem fine with it. We had extra mitigations on top of the standard ones last academic year too with no complaints.

Piggywaspushed · 25/08/2021 10:22

More children will die in car crashes this year than Covid, but people aren't terrified of the roads.

I am actually quite scared of roads ,so everyone wears seatbelts, children in approved car seats, obey the speed limit, check tyres , don't take unnecessary risk - ie take mitigations.

MRex · 25/08/2021 10:23

Please don't distance yourself from a primary age child @Coldbit, he needs you. Open windows or go in the garden, then hug as much as he wants. Wear an FFP2 mask if you're particularly vulnerable. Most children get better quite quickly, so hopefully he will be feeling well soon.

We have too, following the LEA advise. So we are retaining year group bubbles and minimising any cross over times, reducing times parents can actually come into school, keeping our longer drop off/collection times, etc. We shall see. As we were quite badly hit last October hopefully with that, and all the staff now double vaccinated, we will be fine this time round.

So far it seems like pretty much the whole class is infected. 6 positives so far with more pcr tests ongoing today. I'm not sure what the school could actually do that they arent already doing we have staggered start and leave times etc. I know large groups of kids have been off before when they've had to isolate as close contacts but this is different as it seems they are all being infected. Siblings if -ve are still attending school in line with current guidance

Our school has asked that all siblings only attend school if they’ve had a negative PCR. They can’t enforce it of course but I can’t see people not complying.

I think once it's in it often just goes right through the school. It felt like it did in ours last October. And that was under the slightly stricter guidelines and with close contact isolations in place.
Coldbit · 25/08/2021 12:11

Thanks all. Just got to accept that covid is the new nits and they are all probably going to catch it. And yes he has had lots of hugs, I can't not do that

Well, on the bright side, it’s probably best to get it out of the way at the start of term. Hopefully you won’t have any more disruptions for the rest of the year.
