Household isolation while waiting for PCR test

I was wondering if the whole household still need to isolate if someone has symptoms and is waiting on the result of a PCR test. My 3 year old has a cough and temp. He had a PCR test this afternoon. My 6 year old was still at school. Do I need to keep her off tomorrow. We are in Scotland. Thanks

If your 3 year old is positive then your 6 year old will need tested so it depends when you get the results for your 3 year old, keep her at home until you get results then back to school if negative pcr if positive and you abs get dad. I have covid none of my kids have it, fingers crossed she’s negative though

Sorry I should’ve read what I’d written, if positive she, you and her dad will need a pcr

Thanks for replying.

I suppose I'm just wondering what we do while we are waiting on the test result coming back.

I'm in Scotland and had my results back in the early hours so you might get it back before your older one goes to school tomorrow

I had mine at 11 on Friday back by 8am on sat so hopefully it’ll be fast (Scotland too)

sparkle17 · 24/08/2021 19:02

But if I don't get the results back will I have to keep her off. It is that bit that I am unsure off

Children between 5 and 18 need to do a PCR and as long as negative and asymptomatic, can release from isolation.

Children under 5 don't need to isolate.

If someone in the house has Covid, under 18s and anyone who's double jabbed doesn't need to isolate at. You need a PCR test and regular LFTs and only those who are positive/not double jabbed need to do the 10 days.

I suppose I'm just looking for information on the interim period before the PCR result is back. Do if the result does not come back until 4pm for example will my eldest have to be off school all day?

This is the advice given out last week from my local authority if it helps:

"If someone in your household has symptoms you must all stay at home until you have booked and had the results from a PCR test. Follow the latest guidance, which can be found on NHS Inform. If you or your child(ren) test positive, Test and Protect will contact you to provide tailored advice on what to do."

There is also a self-help guide here to help you work out isolation rules: www.nhsinform.scot/self-help-guides/self-help-guide-when-and-how-long-to-self-isolate-due-to-coronavirus

Yes I think you do. NHS inform site says you need to isolate if someone in your household has symptoms and has not been tested/or received their test results.

As said, yes, your 6 year old has to isolate as she is a close contact of someone who has been asked to isolate (your 3 year old whilst awaiting results) To end this isolation, she can take a PCR test. As she's so young, and asymptomatic, I'd hold off on testing her until the 3yo test results come back. If negative, great, all back to normal. If positive, she can take her own PCR and if its negative, end her isolation.

I'm in England but the emails/texts we got when my daughter tested positive last week really didn't make.this clear. We did all isolate till we got a negative PCR but the email and text message we got didn't spell it out, just suggested we.should get a Pcr. No phone calls at all. Completely different to when we isolated as contacts in July and test and trace phoned me 9 times.on the first day! It felt, for me, the right thing to do to isolate until we got pcr results back.

Thanks everyone. Yet another day of school because of covid then. It really sucks. I wonder how long this type of arrangement will be in place.
