Talk to me about the Jannsen's vaccine

So basically I'm really interested in the Jannsen vaccine (Johnson & Johnson) and talking to a friend who lives in Portugal (very early 30's) was given one recently (saw her picture on SM posing with the card). I heard this single shot vaccine was approved in the UK and 20 million was ordered already but the UK would receive it later this year? So with this viral vector single dose jab, do you know of any info which age group would get it? It will suck if if it's only given to a certain age group just like the Oxford Astra Zeneca which I was also interested in. I'm early 30's btw.

It's been available in Ireland, but only about 260k people have had it. It was originally designated for hard to reach people, eg the homeless, but a batch of 50 year olds were offered it, and it was also made available to young people aged 18-30 via pharmacies. My DS got it that way. So it seems it's suitable for multiple age groups.

The above info probably isn't much use to you, but I can tell you that the handful of people I know who've had it didn't have much in the way of side effects.

I'm in the clinical trial for this vaccine. They've been a few blood clot cases, similar to AZ. So I don't think they're going to use it in the younger age group.

I wanted it but in Spain it wasn’t given to under 40s.

Janssen is a good vaccine, also an adenovirus base. It's got the best first dose immunity, though it's possible from the research underway that they will recommend a booster rather than a single jab. There have been very few blood clots, so like AZ that may lead to it being offered only for over 40s. Any risks are vastly lower than from getting covid, and with higher community covid rates now the previous risk calculations are nonsense, so the age restrictions have been a vast mistake in my opinion. There aren't the same restrictions everywhere such as USA; Janssen in the US is available in most areas, AZ are now going for full regulatory approval in the US instead of emergency approval, so that isn't expected until the end of the year. Still, I don't know that you'll find anyone to agree to give you either vaccine in the UK unless the advice changes or unless you have a reason why you can't have the mRNA vaccines. Pfizer and Moderna are offered to younger people and are proving to be extremely safe and effective; is there any particular reason such as PEG allergy why you can't have those?

I’m on the continent and I had it, as did DP and a few of my friends. It was originally offered to over 60s only but then got extended to 50 plus (my age group).

The only side effects were a headache the next day and extreme tiredness for a few days, but DP didn’t get the headache.

My friend with diabetes got given Moderna instead, so they were only giving Janssen to people with no underlying conditions.

not in uk and I was given the janssen single jab.
here at first they gave it to every one over 40 but later reserved the janssen vaccine for homeless people and for seafarers or other travelling workers.
I was a bit tired for a couple of days but fine otherwise.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 24/08/2021 08:17

I’m on the Janssen vaccine trial in the UK and had two shots. It operates very similarly to AZ and the side effects are similar. In my case, and quite a few of those I’ve talked to at the trial centre, the awful side effects came with the second dose not the first. If you were having the one dose vaccine then thee might not be any terrible side effects, other than tiredness.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 24/08/2021 08:21

My understanding is that it will be mainly be used for hard to reach groups such as the homeless in this country, or people in remote and/or less developed parts of the world, where organising a two dose vaccine programme is much more difficult.

isthismylifenow · 24/08/2021 08:36

We have two options here in SA, the single dose J&J and Pfizer. It was initially planned for the health care workers so that they didn't have the delay with waiting for the 2nd dose, and then it was rolled out to the other front line workers (teachers, police etc). It was also planned to be given to the population in outlying areas where travelling to get a 2nd dose would be more difficult. We have a manufacturing plant here, so it is readily available and now the general population has a choice of which they would prefer.

Initially the uptake was lower as it was said that Europe/UK were not accepting the vaccine as part of their non quarantine rules, but that has been changed now, and it seems to have become more popular than the two dose. It is possible to travel fully vaccinated after 4 weeks of having the J&J single dose. We have not had any more information that this point regarding a booster and it is given all all age groups (18+).

From what I have seen/heard, there does seem to be slightly more side affects with the J&J, but short term as in being man down for a few days afterwards.

Ouchiehelpneeded · 24/08/2021 09:09

I'm in the j&j double jab study too. I was convinced I was in the placebo group because I had absolutely no side effects, but it turned out I had had the vaccine. I understand that it has similar risks and side effects to AZ, so I assume they'll avoid giving it to younger people.

fallingdownahole · 24/08/2021 11:00

I'm also thinking it would be the same case with the AZ where it would be given to over 40s. I'm no scientist but I really wanted the AZ instead of the Pfizer and by the time it got to my age group, AZ was no longer offered. I'm unvaccinated btw and keen on getting the vaccine but really wanted the viral vector one.

A close relative also in his 40's in the US recently got the Jannsen vaccine and after noticing my friend in Portugal receiving her dose in a European Union country, I kind of wondered if it would be available for all age groups.
