Are swimming classes safe?

FeelingJittery1 · 23/08/2021 12:36

I’ve got to sign my daughter for the upcoming term/ the usual swimming classes were where one or both parents sit and watch the children in the pool- there are 60/70 people at a given point due to various classes

Is this now deemed safe?

It'll probably be 'safer' than school day in day out to be honest.

FeelingJittery1 · 23/08/2021 14:56

@Thefaceofboe - I’ve only had the single dose Pfizer which I gather is not very effective? My second is early Oct- there is no way I would escape catching Covid for up to a month with everything open and school

I’m 40 there are far younger individuals passing this time around

Wouldn’t worry about 60 - 70 people in a small space once your child is back in school with things like assemblies Confused

If by "safe" you mean "is there a high infection covid infection risk" no there isn't.

If you actually mean "is it safe" well nothing is 100% safe. Along with selfish, safe is the most overused word of the pandemic.

Why are you assuming you will get covid in September? Has your dd not been at school before now? Surely she's been exposed already?

OliveTree75 · 23/08/2021 15:06

My kids have been back swimming since they reopened and been totally fine. The same families are there every week so we haven't all dropped dead. In the nicest possible way, you need to address your anxiety and live again.

Thesearmsofmine · 23/08/2021 15:06

We’ve been back at swimming lessons for months now. Spectators have been allowed the whole time. It was 1 spectator per child but they didn’t stick to it(for example I had to take my youngest with me as well) and lots of kids have both parents there.

x2boys · 23/08/2021 15:15

Covid hasn't gone away you can still catch it all you can do is mitigate the risks
We went swimming, the day before my son tested positive, we had no idea as he didnt develop any symptoms untill after, people may have caught it off him, but clearly its a risk they were willing to take.

Who gets to 'deem' things 'safe'?

Social distancing is no longer legally required in England. You're going to have to make your own decisions about what is or is not 'safe', just as you presumably do for any number of other things. Risk assessments are highly subjective and vary widely, so nobody but you can decide. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to be there, but I can't make up your mind for you.

I loathe the use of the word 'safe' in this context. Keeping you safe, is it safe to do x activity, and of course 'stay safe'! Whenever I hear that - thankfully much less often now than a year ago - I'm always tempted to say, well, I wasn't planning on going swimming in shark infested waters or anything, but thanks all the same.

Why do you think you will get it though? I avoided it the whole of last year while working in a nursery and obviously completely unvaccinated. I’ve had it twice this year, both times having barley any symptoms and this was before I had my first vaccine too.

Me too. It makes me want to punch myself in the face when I hear or see it.

screwcovid · 23/08/2021 15:40

@Thefaceofboe

OP you seriously need to get off the covid board on here, it won’t be helping your anxiety at all. Why are you expecting to be seriously ill off covid? I’ve had it twice and had barley any symptoms both times.

Are you vaccinated?

If do what are you so worried about? Why so paranoid? It's OTT

My dad is currently in hospital with Covid- so it all feels quite closer to home

Yes my daughter was at school before but no bubbles broke in her tear group so doubt she was exposed

DD had been going since May, at first while SD rules were still in place the teacher couldn't get 8n the water so was on the side giving instruction. 1 x parent per child and parents sat on the side on seats spaced far apart with masks on.

Last couple of weeks parents are back out at the viewing window. Seats are still spaced apart and the instructor can now be in the water. People seem to be being very sensible, there isn't any gathering in crowds, everyone just makes their way to where they need to be.

Sunnygold · 23/08/2021 16:15

It’s allowed but I wouldn’t. Moist air is terrible for transmitting viruses. They survive better in moist air.

TheGenealogist · 23/08/2021 17:09

@Remmy123

For god sake of course it's fine!!! Move on!!! You can't stay in forever!
This is the poster who posts EVERY SINGLE DAY about Covid, how scared she is about Covid, how scared she is about the vaccine, how she got hysterical the the point of practically fainting when she finally had her vaccine, how she's struggling with "scaremongering".

OP - in the kindest way possible STOP POSTING. Step away. This is not helping you.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/08/2021 17:31

The instructors are well trained to prevent drowning.
There will be H&S policies to deal with hazards such as chlorine leaks.
Personally it's our journey on a dual carriageway at rush hour with a couple of awkward junctioms that is the greatest plausible hazard and we've managed to go weekly without major incident for the past decade.

Our lessons have been back since Sept last year. I haven't once attempted to cover my face because the humidity is high risk of sensory overwhelm anyway. There's been times when that area's had the highest Covid rates in the country (pre-vacvination programme). So far there's been no Covid or Covid scares in our family (it'll probably happen, but hey ho)

Nothing is "safe" but the benefits of children learning to swim and getting exercise is a very strong benefit.

shinynewapple21 · 23/08/2021 17:49

If the watching area is similar to how it was where my DC used to have lessons then parents seating area did mean you are packed closely together and ventilation not great . Obviously your situation may be completely different. I suppose you have to make a choice whether it's a risk you want to take, or you can wear a mask or just drop off and collect .

CottageDwelling · 23/08/2021 17:53

@FeelingJittery1 were you like this pre-pandemic? Hope your child is not picking up on your "scared" vibes. Really get some perspective.

Dottydoodoo · 23/08/2021 18:20

My DH has been very worried about covid the whole way through, but he agreed that our DS needed to get back to his swimming lessons and he started back a couple of weeks ago. It’s felt pretty safe, he is in the water with up to seven other children and the instructors stand on the side. I wear a mask (and absolutely melt underneath it 😂) to watch and then at the end I bundle him up in a big dryrobe style towel and get him quickly changed and then we get out of there!

I suppose it’s different to your situation as there are only lessons going on at that time so there are not so many people around, but it seems safe enough for my covid concerned DH. I think the most risk in my situation is if the other children in the lesson are carrying covid, but they are in the same close proximity as they are at school so I guess we just have to go with the flow!
