Positive stories of smell and taste?

I started feeling ill last week but didn't occur to me it could be covid until Monday when I experienced the dreaded loss of smell! It's obviously been 5 days now and I can't taste a thing BUT I'm getting the slightest hint of a strong smell before it disappears again. For example, I sniffed some curry powder and could vaguely smell it, tried again and it had gone. Was it like this for anyone else and did it indicate that it was going back to normal? I have a 'chemical' smell in my nose too, like when you have a cold. I miss eating 😂

I got mine back after about 7 days. I noticed I could smell Vicks again and I would say by two weeks it was fully back

Thanks @OliveTree75, Google and even mn is full of 'I had covid in March 2020 and still can't smell anything' (and I truly, truly sympathise because it is miserable and disconcerting) but I'm really hoping that they are in the minority. I know it could be a lot worse and at least I'm not eating for the sake of it but I can't imagine this for months and months!

My son had Covid in May and still can't taste or smell anything. Like you he often gives something a sniff and thinks he can smell it but then nothing at all.

I currently have a sinus infection and can't taste or smell. It's awful, lost my small pleasures in life like a glass of wine or some chocolate. But at least I know it'll come back once the antibiotics kick in. I feel for you, I hope it comes back very soon!

@bakinbiscuits your poor son! I did have a very blocked nose so it could be a contributing factor but I suddenly wish I didn't like eating so much! If I don't shift some weight as a result of this, I'll be annoyed (trying to see a bright side!).

Day 10 here and my smell is coming back more each day. Taste is slower to come back but I think it’s improving. I lost both completely, very weird sensation.

10 days mine returned

kitty1993 · 20/08/2021 18:29

Oh I really feel for you. I had this when I had covid and it was one of the hardest symptoms for me. Psychologically it really got to me not being able to smell anything!! It gets better by around day 10 and I found it came back quite quickly once it started to return. I also had that horrible cold smell stuck in my nose.

Wishing you a speedy recovery x

Ah these are giving me some reassurance. Obviously I'm probably noticing it more given that I'm stuck inside and would usually be boredom eating.

I'm in the same boat OP, lost my sense of smell and taste completely on Tuesday. I've heard varying stories from friends, one took only a couple of weeks to return but one friend had Covid in December and still hasn't got his back! For me it's been the worst part of Covid.

clemensiadove · 20/08/2021 19:26

Mine came back after about 7-8 days. I was panicking that it wouldn't!

eandz13 · 20/08/2021 19:33

I'm about 8/9 days on from losing mine completely, and I've started to get a vague whiff from strong smelling things (like detergent, washing up liquid etc, couldn't smell them whatsoever a few days ago) which is exciting. Could really, really mildly taste some brown sauce today too! First thing I've kind of tasted in 9 days. Hope this gives you some hope that it will come back pretty quickly!
