Partner positive, myself & DD negative

How soon after infection does a PCR show a positive result?
For example if my partner was infected and gave it to us is it possible the PCR was too soon to show infection and we could still develop symptoms in the next few days?
Thanks

DH tested positive a few weeks ago, me and 4 DC were negative. Myself and 2x older DC did daily lateral flows out of interest and never showed positive. He didn't isolate from us, we shared a bed every night etc but didn't catch its anecdotal obviously but I think it shows they are right about vaccines drastically reducing transmission.

It takes 2-5 days to show positive though so if you are worried take another test in a few days.

Porcupineintherough · 20/08/2021 12:30

Yes, in short. If you get symptoms try again in a few days.

I am on around my 8th day of being infected with Covid. Done LFTs on DS and they are negative, although I don't trust their reliability. He has no symptoms and is bouncing around like normal. I'm assuming that he either hasn't been infected, or is asymptomatic if he has. He's isolating with me anyway as I'm a single parent so he can't go out on his own. Will do another LFT on him on "freedom" morning before we leave the house.

I thought so, I guess we just wait and see

Glad your son is OK and you are nearly out of the other side of it

When DH tested positive I did a PCR test the next day and it was negative.

I tested again 5 days later and got a positive result. DH had isolated in a separate bedroom with ensuite but must have infected me before he had any symptoms.

I had started to develop some symptoms before the second test so the positive wasn't a surprise. When I did the first test I didn't feel quite right but wasn't unwell. I don't know if that feeling was very early stage Covid or stress because DH had just found out he had Covid.

It's all down to luck really I'm afraid.

I hope your DH gets better soon and you don't catch it. Hopefully you have both had your vaccinations.

My mother who lives with us brought it home from work. Within 2 days DP had tested positive on a LF and then got it confirmed with a PCR. I kept testing negative for another 4 days then lost my taste and smell, a temperature and an awful headache. Sure enough a PCR came back 24 hours later with a positive result. I thought I had evaded the lurgy and was feeling quite smug. This was back in January before any of us had been vaccinated.

Newchances · 20/08/2021 23:53

I think day 2 and day 8 is advice if vaccinated ? I think if not vaccinated you just test initially then only if you get symptoms as you have to isolate regardless ?
I hope you are all OK. Scary when it's close to home.
I know 3 people who caught it on day 10,but all double vax and mild symptoms. Good luck

Friends son (19) tested positive. Other kids (23 and 17) tested daily with LFTs for the next few days. 19 yo isolated in own room, shared bathroom.

Day 2, LFT negative
Day 3, LFT and PCR negative
Day 4, LFT negative
Day 5, 23yo developed symptoms, PCR positive, 17yo PCR negative. 19 and 23 yo isolated together, shared household bathroom.
Day 6, 7, LFT negative for 17yo
Day 8, negative PCR
Day 9 negative LFT, then developed symptoms
Day 10, 17yo positive PCR.

17 yo would be exempt from contact isolation under new rules, yet the incubation period is known to be up to around 10-14 days.

Bonkers.
