First new case in 6 months apparently lockdown for 3 days for most.

EileenGC · 17/08/2021 09:04

I’d hate living there.

Unless I didn’t have family and friends all over the world and a job that requires travel, in which case I guess I’d love it.

Bloody bell, 1 case…

Malin52 · 17/08/2021 09:05

Although I wonder how long we can sustain this. We need to accept that cases will arise but only 3rd of population have had 1 or more vac doses. We've been to slow I think while basking in in our Covid free environment. Too many people saying 'what's the point? We aren't going anywhere'... Hmm

I live here. I have friends and family all over the world and my job involves travel.

NZ is bloody wonderful

Maybe this will serve as a kick up the bum for the vaccine programme? That would be a good outcome.

Whichjab · 17/08/2021 09:10

What is going to happen when everyone is fully vaccinated ? The UK shows that being vaccinated doesn't stop people from becoming symptomatic and doesn't stop the spread. Will the government still lockdown as deaths will still happen even if 100% of the population is vaccinated.

Sparklingbrook · 17/08/2021 09:11

Yes that’s what I read in the news @Malin52

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 17/08/2021 09:13

From the outside looking in, you've been bonkers. It's really disappointing to watch - a total missed opportunity to vaccinate in advance.

You do realise that this whole thing started with 1 case, right?
TheKeatingFive · 17/08/2021 09:21

It’s interesting to note that both Aus/NZ used the benefit of having more time than others spectacularly to their advantage last March when it came to prepping their countries for lockdown.

Yet both have squandered it really badly now when it comes to vaccine rollout.

Perhaps the psychology of vaccine acceptance is just totally different? Having a sense of urgency is really beneficial for vaccine take up.

Cornettoninja · 17/08/2021 09:25

Have NZ got access to a decent amount of vaccines now then? (Sorry - I’m not up to date with Oceania at all really!)

If they have then now’s the time to make it all worth it and get vaccinated imho but then I don’t really know how vaccines have been received generally over there.

Enough to vaccinate whole country. We've only just invited the over 60s.... Hmm

@Malin52 ouch, yeah that’s not great. Hopefully they’ll pick up the pace soon.

Turangawaewae · 17/08/2021 09:36

It didn't seem ethical to take vaccines from countries experiencing shortages and massive surges a few months ago. Particularly when we were covid free.

Our rollout is going quite well. We've got 20% fully vaccinated and 34% having had one dose. It's ramping up and I think most people will have had at least one dose in the next few weeks.

Yes, if the vaccine programme had been started much sooner would be in a really strong position by now.
whatswithtodaytoday · 17/08/2021 09:39

Why is the NZ roll-out so slow? Is it lack of interest in the population (perhaps because they feel safe)? Or just poor government?

PotteringAlong · 17/08/2021 09:40

You are going to be knackered when you open up at this rate. I cannot believe you have all those vaccines and haven’t pushed getting them into peoples arms. You cannot keep the boarders closed forever; your tourism industry must be on its knees. When it opens up, all those people, you cannot lock down for 1 case and hardly any of you will be protected… Shock

3luckystars · 17/08/2021 09:40

It’s impossible to keep it out isn’t it. At least there are vaccines available now so things are not as bad as if this happened a year ago.
Sending good vibes to the New Zealander’s from Ireland x

Turangawaewae · 17/08/2021 09:42

Where in NZ are you @Malin52? In Auckland I know lots of people in their 40's and 50's who've had their vaccines. Lots have also been getting walk in appointments. Anyone over 18 will be able to book from Sept the 1st.

IIRC we have just over 4 million people who are eligible and we're currently doing 250,000 a week.

Cornettoninja · 17/08/2021 09:43

@Turangawaewae you may be right but there are effects from covid that aren’t to do with the virus itself (plus a myriad of reasons why making the vaccine available in some countries is only a half solution, particularly if they don’t have the infrastructure to support a large rollout). NZ and Australia have controlled the virus really well but those methods haven’t been free from consequence and are largely unsustainable long term.

itsgettingwierd · 17/08/2021 09:43

Is there any idea how it got in if there is no evidence of a border connection?

What do they do with regards tracing? Is there mass pcr testing to route out cases?

I think there's some really interesting data that can come out of NZ because it is covid free. So how are random cases popping up, is there community cases being missed?

What variant do you have there? What symptoms are you asked to test for?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/08/2021 09:44

I currently have Covid and I'd rather put up with it than go into lockdown at the drop of a hat.

CloudPop · 17/08/2021 09:45

Agree with you Weird, would be very interesting to understand where that one case came from

Well, it's the first new case to be found. He's picked it up in the community somewhere.
