I tested positive on Saturday, completely asymptomatic. My isolation period is due to end on the 24th. I have started to develop cold like symptoms today. According to the NHS website you have to isolate for 10 days from the start of any symptoms, is that correct? Would that mean my isolation would have to carry on until the 27th now? Sad

Id go from Saturday. Why make it last longer than needed. If you tested positive then you were able to spread the virus symptoms or not

Mindymomo · 17/08/2021 08:40

I would stay at ending isolation on the 24th, unless you have symptoms or a new temperature then.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/08/2021 09:40

Thank you. I want to do the right thing but I'm supposed to be going to a once a year event on the 27th! Envy

I would see how you are closer to the time. If at that point you're coughing or have a temperature, then continue isolating.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 17/08/2021 10:31

Since your event is on the final day, I'd be tempted to go anyway... (Masked, distanced, and if you're well and not coughing or sneezing)

SandyStarfish · 17/08/2021 10:35

You would isolate 10 days from your positive test.

x2boys · 17/08/2021 11:23

I think its more to do with how long you are infectious for, so the initial ten days should be enough
Although i was listening to a scientist on the BBC who said you can be infectious for much longer than the ten day period🤷‍♀️

Yes, I know who I caught Covid from and could potentially have caught it anywhere between 8 to 4 days ago as I've seen this person daily since last Monday at work. So I'm hoping that the 24th should be long enough.

I would be avoiding the event on the 27th as it’s likely you could still pass it on.

RoseAndRose · 17/08/2021 12:45

As you have started symtoms, then test now.

If negative, you end SI as originally planned. If positive, the clock re-sets from the onset of symtoms.

TheNarwhalBalloon · 17/08/2021 12:49

It partly depends whether you're more worried about what's legally allowed or about potentially passing it on to others (maybe a lot of others from the sound of a special event?)

DesperateForSun · 17/08/2021 12:52

Symptoms can take a while to appear, you do not need to restart the clock. You should be fine in a week’s time. If you’re concerned, take a lateral flow test

SandyStarfish · 17/08/2021 13:06

You tested positive via PCR right? So you only need to do 10 days from then. Doesn't matter if synptoms only appear after that.

Test via how, a PCR or LFT? I only tested positive on Saturday so I'd assume I'd still test positive. I'm not convinced about the accuracy of lateral flow as I did several negative ones at the weekend but PCR was positive.

Yes, positive PCR on Saturday.

So 10 days from positive test. I work for T&T. If you had symptoms before the test, the 10 days would start from then. Don't do another test now, it'll be positive again and there's no point.

Bobholll · 17/08/2021 13:52

10 days from your positive test. Symptoms can appear later. Your infection doesn’t re-set because symptoms appear later on. You’ve still had it since Saturday.

If by day 11, you still have a fever & feel unwell, the advice is to continue to isolate. If you have an on-going cough, you don’t. Coughs can linger for weeks after the infectious period. Same with loss of taste & smell!

Thank you, good to hear from someone who works for T&T. I likely contracted Covid sometime between Monday and Friday last week, had a positive PCR on Saturday and was completely asymptomatic until today.

Yes I have lost my sense of smell and taste today, most people I know who had Covid didn't get theirs back for weeks!
