Testing positive while on holiday abroad with friends query

Has anyone been in this situation and if so can you clarify what happens? Have friends in Spain currently in this predicament….

2 families on holiday together. One child becomes symptomatic and tests positive on pcr. Family of child isolate and arrange pcr tests. They take lateral flow tests beforehand which are positive for one parent and negative for the other. What will happen to them?

Also, what will happen to the other family group who are on holiday with them, who have children have all been in close contact indoors with the positive parent and child? Both parents are fully vaccinated and the children 14 and 12 are obviously unvaccinated. Are they allowed to travel home if they test negative or do they need to quarantine?

Thanks, do you know what happens to close contacts who test negative?

Ouch

www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/spain/coronavirus Advice is here is everyone stays at the accommodation until contacted by Spanish authorities and told what to do. This may take 48-72 hours. It seems like what happens next will depend on the region (different regional policies I guess) and they may be able to stay where they are or have to go to a quarantine hotel. I suspect the whole group will be told to isolate (assuming they’ve been sharing accommodation). I don’t know if a negative test could reduce the time.

This website also may be helpful, especially as it has a link to all the regional Covid helplines

A couple of weeks ago on Majorca, 2 girls went there for 4 days. After test to fly home, one of them tested positive. They were both collected from their hotel and taken to another hotel and stayed in separate rooms to isolate for 10 days before being allowed home. They didn’t know who was paying for this additional hotel, nor the cost of the flights home.

Please keep us updated as to what does actually happen.

Watermelon221 · 16/08/2021 08:20

The family who tested positive (father and dc) are still out there awaiting pcr results for the father.p after a positive lateral flow.

The family who were on holiday with them (separate hotel room) but travelled and socialised/ate together etc are now back home in uk having cut holiday short.

So obviously close contact isolation is not a thing in Spain. I presume they will have had to have had negative test before travel, but must have been lateral flow due to timings as came home so quickly.

Close contact isolation definitely IS a thing in Spain - I live here and have had to do it twice and dc three times!

Sounds like negative family did a rapid test maybe in a pop up testing place and flew out of the country before the authorities were informed of the positive contacts.
Sneaky.

minipie · 16/08/2021 12:01

Indeed. Close contact family have ignored the rules. And sat on a flight knowing they have been in recent close contact with two positive cases. Irresponsible in the extreme, bluntly.

You mean socially irresponsible?

They should be made to pay for anyone else’s isolation if they’ve passed it on.

Watermelon221 · 17/08/2021 12:23

Yes and been out and about for meals out/socialising on return too

Well, I mean cheeky fucking twats with no thought for others really! And we wonder why Covid isn't going away. Confused

The close contact family while “sneaky” have done nothing against the rules now close contact isolation is scrapped for fully vaccinated and under 18s in the UK. They did a negative test and flew home which I think is what most people would do in this situation.

Watermelon221 · 17/08/2021 13:20

Yes maybe but it seems close contact isolation still applies in Spain?

They should have isolated out there for 10 days after their negative test and after informing the Spanish authorities. (Spanish gov regulations) It was also before the new isolation rules came in in the UK.
