Support thread for CEV / CV

Just that.

It is potentially an anxious time for people who are still advised to shield.

So maybe a support thread would be a good idea?

Let's see how this goes.

Presumably all the people celebrating not wearing a mask or keeping a safe distance from people will be too busy partying to bother us Smile

Currently playing Carcassonne with the kids in the garden under the new gazebo.

I tried ringing our GP in order to get my DD vaccinated as she's 12. They seemed most surprised that I was asking about this and said they would refer my query to the Covid team but I haven't heard back yet . I had emailed the CCG to ask and they said that I needed a letter from the GP so that she should go to a walk in one. GP said that they wouldn't be doing that.

I think it's going to be really difficult to identify those eligible because of having a CEV parent but hoping that I hear something soon. Ideally I would like her to have the first one before going back to school.

I really sympathise. The guidance is not all that straightforward to interpret.

I'm CEV but not actually immunocompromised as such.

If my DC13 get vaccinated it will be because he is himself immunosuppressed.

I'm CEV. I've never shielded, never wanted to, haven't been fully vaccinated yet and I have worked a really risky job. I've socialised as normal whenever it's been allowed and certainly do now and I don't wear a mask.

But this isn't because I think CEV people are being silly for shielding - it's everyone's personal choice what they do. If you're still being cautious now, that's your call.

I haven't ever been, because my illnesses are very severe and take SO much of my life and my families lives in what we can and can't do. It's a constant balancing act between DHs work, the kids and school/ nursery, and my illnesses and the ludicrous amount of time I'm in hospital or very unwell at home. So I made the decision (with DH) that Covid wasn't going to add to that anymore than it had to (ie with the rules everyone had to follow in lockdowns etc). I respect anyone's choices but my illnesses are sadly always going to be in the forefront of absolutely everything we can and can't do so, that's enough limitations for us.

As for the question did I avoid colds etc before covid - no not colds / flu etc (though I have the flu jab) .... I do fastidiously avoid any stomach bugs / noro - always have done and always will do . I have severe bowel disease and other gastro illnesses and can no longer eat solid foods and exist on a prescribed liquid diet. A simple D&V bug for everyone else puts me in hospital for weeks, and if it happened now I would need my colon removing.

I have had such struggles over the years when needing to avoid such illnesses and have been hospitalised as a result many times . I work in a job where they're easy to catch! But since covid I have just put my foot down and said well, some people want to shield from covid as it would be a risk to them, I want to effectively shield from stomach things which would be a major risk to me. And my request has been accepted at work. So that's something positive.

Anyway this definitely isn't goady and I respect anyone being cautious and shielding still, I believe OP you're shielding your child - I would do the same (and did when one of mine was super preemie prior to the pandemic). I just wanted to give another CEV perspective.

@CordeliasPencil thanks for sharing, I think sometimes when you have a serious illness you have to accept Covid as just one more risk and still try to live. The fear of it all just gets so much other wise! Chronic illness is bloody exhausting enough as it is!

herecomesthsun · 13/08/2021 10:15

Of course it is a choice. You don't have to shield, or take extra precautions for covid, just as I don't have to stop taking some precautions, or take risks other than carefully planned ones, as far as I can.

Good luck.

It's a choice, but all the options are a bit shit, and you have to balance it to work out the best (least shit) route for your family to navigate.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 14/08/2021 11:38

@CatAlice how are you doing?
@MilesJuppIsMyBitch did you try turning up at a vaccination centre?

I see the BBC have finally noticed that the 12-15 year old jabs aren't actually happening.

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 14/08/2021 12:33

Apparently detailed instructions went to GPs yesterday so hopefully we should hear something soon

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 14/08/2021 12:52

I hope so YouMean.

I definitely worried about flu before covid, and did what I could to avoid it (basically impossible if you're working with other people!). I still caught it every few years despite the vaccine. Covid is an extra on top of the already existing flu risk!

herecomesthsun · 20/08/2021 18:08

We have heard from the CCG today that vaccine roll out has been approved in our area.

So DC13 can choose the vaccine if they wish.
