Masks to be Mandatory in Scotland until at least next Spring

Just read this and wondered what others in Scotland are thinking.
The article states that Scotland will stick to the strictest rules in the UK and it is hoped that voluntary mask wearing, as in Asian Countries, will be a measure that is adopted. I truly don't know if I can go on anymore. I haven't been out for over a year because of these bloody rules and this is just enough now.

Brilliant news, at least the Scottish Government are taking things seriously. I will happily keep wearing my mask in shops and on public transport.

Gothichouse40 · 10/08/2021 10:00

Wearing a mask does not bother me. I'm glad Scottish Govt is being cautious. The virus hasn't gone anywhere and apparently Lambda is causing a few issues in South America.

emmathedilemma · 10/08/2021 10:00

urgh, no surprise there then!!
I'm starting to think this "beyond level 0" is just fake news. Unless you're planning a party/big gathering or want to go clubbing it feels rather like level 0 with a load of restrictions still!

Cornettoninja · 10/08/2021 10:01

I have to agree with pp and think this is a sensible move (that I wish England’s resident jokers had made).

I’m sorry your finding it tough though.

Palavah · 10/08/2021 10:03

You've not been out because of the requirement to wear masks? Why has that stopped you going out?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/08/2021 10:07

Well going by the fact that at least 50% of the people I saw in the supermarket yesterday were maskless, when before now I would have said compliance was at least 90% every single other time I've ventured in there in the past year, it looks like no matter what the 'guidance' is, a significant proportion of people have decided unilaterally that yesterday was 'it's all over' day, and have binned off mask wearing anyway.

I'm sorry op. Scotland truly is becoming quite authoritarian these days.
Stuffin · 10/08/2021 10:09

Doesn't surprise me and I am so glad to be in England.

I suffer social anxiety and panic attacks and there is no way on earth I could wear a mask. I wont wear a lanyard as I dont want anyone knowing I have 'something wrong' with me, so have been waiting until they are optional. In Scotland now, I could bop around at a nightclub, stand drinking at the bar in a busy pub, but I cant buy a pint of milk from my local shop. It's nuts. I'm quite prepared to social distance (although that's been stopped too) and I dont want to go anywhere there are crowds, so I think I should be allowed to decide if I can get my food shop at a very quiet time. That right is not mine and it's wrong.

Ah, that well known trait of Authoritarian systems everywhere, of politely asking people to do something, with absolutely no come-back when they don't.

Yup

RunnerDown · 10/08/2021 10:12

Very pleased to hear it. Far too early to get rid of masks. Nicola now needs to sort out ventilation in schools

IndigoC · 10/08/2021 10:14

Good for them. I think they’re going to look wise come mid-Autumn.

Very notable that Germany, where N95s are mandated, has a very low case rate compared to most of Europe right now.

Lockdownbear · 10/08/2021 10:15

That is a complete understatement.
While many adults will ditch them in shops and few will say a word. I was in a hairdressers on Saturday, of the 3 employees and 2 customers, I was the only one in a mask.

The people who will sick with it are the people who are forced too, employees and school kids.

Shellfishblastard · 10/08/2021 10:15

Yes I am in full support of it and I am happy to continue to wear a mask. It is a small ask in my opinion.

OP have you tried wearing a mask? I have to wear one to work and you do get used to it. It’s weird initially but after a while it’s ok. Could you try wearing one around the house / garden to get you more used to it?

dementedma · 10/08/2021 10:15

Scotland is practically a dictatorship under the SNP quite frankly. The wearing of masks at indoor gatherings has had me cancelling our AGM just this morning, again. Other events are in jeopardy. Life in Scotland is nowhere near "normal" or even close to it. And yet, for all the caution, infection and death rates are no better per head of population than anywhere else. It is the usual SNP agenda of doing exactly the opposite of whatever Boris does.

Jorrris · 10/08/2021 10:18

Yep. With people cheering wee Jimmy on.

Lockdownbear · 10/08/2021 10:19

Yes and the only way forwards is for the Labour / Tory and Lib-Dems to actually stand together, between them they have a higher share of the vote.
I hope Alex Salmonds party might dilute the SNP a bit too.

A one party state is most definitely not a good thing.

Yet more ridiculous hyperbole.

A 'Dictatorship', that had fully open, free, and democratic elections less than six months ago?

Honestly. This 'Scotland is a Dictatorship/Authoritarian' shite is offensive. Please spout this nonsense in front of my Spanish colleague who grew up under Franco, then you might get a wee glimpse of the reality of what it means to actually live in authoritarian dictatorships. Assuming she doesn't just clock you one.

ExmoorValley · 10/08/2021 10:21

Recently came back from the Channel Islands where masks were ditched months ago. It was heaven. I saw no masks at all apart from on the ferry there. It was so nice to just be normal. No treating each other like lepers. It was fabulous. I wont be wearing a mask again as thankfully I'm in the England.
Sorry OP you are struggling. My advice is just dont wear one.

PineappleTart · 10/08/2021 10:21

I'm in Scotland and I feel the approach is quite sensible. Despite the whole nightclub nonsense but that's a different story. Even if I was England I suspect I'd be wearing a mask for the foreseeable. It's not a huge inconvenience once I got past the panic I felt initially wearing one

Whyevencare · 10/08/2021 10:24

I'm in Scotland and haven't worn a mask since March. How can it be safe in England to ditch the mask but unsafe in Scotland Hmm. This is political bullshit.

Had a haircut last week and only one customer wearing a mask, everyone else was mask free, it was bliss Smile

Yes, I've tried. I have to wear one to get my hair cut, and I have palpitations and the shakes by the time I get out the salon. I used to enjoy getting my hair coloured and styled but now I go when I am the only one in the shop, arrive with wet hair, get it cut then go home to dry it.

Where do you think the virus is going? Do you believe we should wear masks until covid doesn't exist?

I think you need to find a way forward on this op, Scotland isn’t going to ditch masks next spring why would it? Covid will have not gone away by then..so they will continue as a popular measure with the majority. I would get yourself a land yard and not worry too much otherwise few ask or even wonder I think as a lot of people exempt. But waiting for them to go will be waiting forever
