Dss dm tested positive on LFT

Dss came over yesterday afternoon and his dm has tested positive at work this morning.

Dh and dss are supposed to go away tonight to a hotel as they're off to see some caves in Wales.

My dc have things on - dd a conference today, both booked into sports club tomorrow and ds birthday is on the weekend so he's supposed to be having a sleepover.

Dss dm wants him back as she says she can't be alone for 10 days..

What do we do! I feel that we should keep dss, test him daily for 10 days and cancel trips, conferences, sleepover ect - I'm absolutely gutted about this but feel it's the right thing to do. As far as I'm aware its only dss who needs to self isolate but I don't feel comfortable seeing family, friends ect. Dss and ds share a room, dss is a cuddly child so there isn't really a chance that if he has got it that he won't have passed it on imo.

Dh is slightly more relaxed and says we test him and carry on like normal until either symptoms or positive test result. He is also self employed and won't not work until positive test or symptoms.

Help please!

Has his mum tested on lateral flow or has it been confirmed by PCR?

StarryNight468 · 09/08/2021 10:44

LFT but doing PCR test today.

If DM has had positive PCR, then you are right, DSS has to isolate for 10 days, which can be with you or back with DM. Normally it’s recommended they stay put, but in your case, you have to discuss with all parties where he should isolate. If he stays with you, only him has to isolate unless he gets symptoms, then you all isolate.

Rules change from the 16 August that children and double jabbed adults don’t have to isolate after close contact.

DSS needs to isolate for 10 days of his Mum tests positive on PCR.

StarryNight468 · 09/08/2021 10:55

So my dc can still go to their planned things as long as dss doesn't test positive or develop symptoms?

Yes. Which is why it might be better for him to go home. If he’s home for at least 48hrs before he develops symptoms then the rest of you won’t be close contacts and won’t have to isolate.

If he tests positive now or becomes symptomatic over the next few days then it’s a moot point.

What does he want to do?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 09/08/2021 11:11

Wait until PCR is confirmed but I think your DCs can go to activities so as long as they haven’t had close contact with DSS’s mum. DSS should obviously isolate as best as you can and get PCR for him.

I would also get lateral flow tests for everyone in your household to be on the safe side. And do them twice a week.

Obviously this changes if DSS has a positive test on PCR.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/08/2021 11:11

If the DS is self isolating at yours the sleepover is definitely off if the mum test positive on PCR.

StarryNight468 · 09/08/2021 11:33

DH doesn't want dss to go to his dms because he might not get it and obviously DH doesn't want dss to get it if there's a chance he hasn't. Dss is with us 50/50 so this is his home too. Dss dm has now done PCR and will get results within 48hrs. She's apparently been feeling very tired and under the weather for the last few days.

Will do LFT for us and dc, cancel the sleepover and DH has cancelled hotel and caving. My dc can still go to their activities until they become a close contact and they're happy to do daily testing.

Currently she just has lateral flow so no legal obligation to isolate. Do not cancel anything certainly yet. Continue as normal. I would not have cancelled the hotel or caving yet either but it's done so there we are.

StarryNight468 · 09/08/2021 12:03

@Xenia we feel there's a moral obligation even if it's not a legal one to cancel the hotel. Someone clinically vulnerable could use the room after.

What Xenia means is that there's always the chance that DM will be negative on the PCR test, in which case no one has to isolate, not even DM, so you may still have been able to go (unlikely though)

Xenia · 09/08/2021 12:37

Yes, although if she feels ill already may be the PCR will be positive. Also sometimes if you cancel things early you get a full refund so cancelling sooner might have been the right decision.
