To self isolate or not to self isolate

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 08/08/2021 13:11

Ds is 19, he went to the pub with his mate and his mate felt ill the next day.

Took 3 lateral flow tests, two negative one positive. He has lost taste and smell.

We have made ds self isolate. However, no one has contacted us to tell him to stay inside. I have given him a lateral flow test every day for last five days and it has come back negative.

Have asked him to ask friend whether he had a PCR test. Friend hasn’t had one.

Ds needs to go and collect his A-Level results on Tuesday!! Tuesday will be 7 days. Ds has had one jab.

Should he continue to self isolate and not pick up his results?? I have no idea what to do for the best.

To reiterate he hasn’t been pinged we haven’t been contacted by anyone and I read this this morning on NHS website.

You may want to tell people you've been in close contact with in the past 48 hours that you might have COVID-19.

What does close contact mean?
They do not need to self-isolate unless they're contacted by the NHS Test and Trace service. But they should take extra care to follow advice on how to avoid catching and spreading COVID-19.

Your son should have a PCR test, his mate should have one too. The absolute best responsible thing your son can do is self isolate for ten days from contact with his mate.

Someone else will have to pick up his results.

Watapalava · 08/08/2021 18:45

Op your son is 19

Surely it’s up to him what he does anyway!

JustDanceAddict · 08/08/2021 18:56

Get him a pcr

Datsandcogs · 08/08/2021 19:09

The friend needs a PCR test. If he’s positive, as he probably is, he should isolate.

Even without the friend having a PCR test your DS should isolate if he had close contact, 10 days from the contact. There’s no point in your DS having a PCR unless he develops symptoms. You need to make alternative arrangements for his A level results.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 08/08/2021 19:11

@JustDanceAddict

Get him a pcr
But that doesn't mean he won't still get Covid/test positive later, that's why it's 10 days isolation, because of the incubation period!!!

How do people STILL not know this.

@Iimaginethiswillbefun.

It was irresponsible/inconsiderate of his friend not to get a PCR, but I would get DS to isolate for 10 days. Day one being the day after he saw his friend. I'd check the school website to see what the contingency plan is for collecting his exam results

@Watapalava. People are permitted to use common sense. People can isolate without Govt Approval.

CrocodilesCry · 08/08/2021 22:33

It's pretty likely the mate's PCR will come back positive - he's had a positive LF, he's ill and he's lost his sense of smell.

Your son needs to book his own PCR test (recommended if you've been a close contact of a positive case) and take the day after he saw his friend as day one of 10 days of isolating.

Xenia · 08/08/2021 22:41

By law your son has no need to self isolate and should collect his results in person.

HSHorror · 09/08/2021 01:16

Opsdswould be exempt from isolation as neither u18 nor fully vaxxed yet

HSHorror · 09/08/2021 01:17

Would NOT be

It’s no wander the country is grinding to a halt when people start making their own rules

You isolate when positive or when T&T contact you

It ground to a halt when people stopped caring about others, like only isolating if they were told officially that they should when they knew they could well be spreading the virus to others...
m0therofdragons · 09/08/2021 21:54

If pcr is negative I’d let him go but ask him to wear a mask to protect others just in case he’s incubating it. Hope he gets the results he wants! Good luck.

Frazzled2207 · 09/08/2021 22:40

Your son won't get contacted unless the friend does a PCR test which is then positive.

It sounds like you are doing the right thing broadly. Get him a PCT test and if negative and he's still ok, I would let him go to pick up his results. Best of luck to him.

Neither of these things have happened to OP
Iimaginethiswillbefun · 09/08/2021 22:53

DS’s PCR test has come back negative by tomorrow he will have tested negative 7 days in a row.

@Mindymomo

Your DS won’t get contacted because his friend hasn’t had a PCR test yet. Close contact means within 2 metres of person with symptoms for more than 15 minutes. It is advice, not legal. Even if your son gets a PCR test and it comes back negative, he should still isolate for the full 10 days.

The rules change on 16 August when you don’t have to isolate, but recommend getting a PCR test if you are a close contact.

Only changes for those who are double jabbed or under 18, I think many people have forgotten that part!
CaffeineAndNicotine · 09/08/2021 23:09

Interesting. So if someone has a positive pcr do t and t automatically contact work colleagues? My colleague did and none of us have been contacted so we are all sort of ignoring it (no symptoms and no lft +)

CaffeineAndNicotine · 09/08/2021 23:31

To be clear, this is more about questioning if colleague has it. I assume boss has seen pcr results although I have not spoken to boss about it at all, I found out from a person at the same level as me who boss texted.i do not believe other people who were on shift with positive person even know. I do not condone this approach but understand it from the company perspective.

Banani · 10/08/2021 07:32

So if someone has a positive pcr do t and t automatically contact work colleagues?

T&T will ask the person with the positive PCR test about contacts in the preceding days. Those that are deemed to be close contacts should then be contacted by T&T. It is quite dependent on the accuracy of the information the person who had the positive provides though.

Watapalava · 10/08/2021 07:39

Frazzled that's my point. Neither of those things have happened so her son doesn't isolate. People just make their own rules up its ridiculous. Hes 19 for a start its up to him what he does! In 6 days time he won't even be asked to isolate

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 10/08/2021 11:03

The good news is, he got into university!! UCAS updated at 8.30am.
