No dentist, self isolating and wisdom tooth infection

Not me but thought I'd ask here.

Any suggestions. Was going to tell them to ring 111, but obviously they can't see a dentist in person (even if they could find one that is taking emergencies?)

Self isolating as a close contact, not yet officially spoken to T&T, but was definitely around someone who tested positive on 3rd (they were with them 2nd and 3rd) .

Any other suggestions?

Sorry they were with someone in 1st and 2nd who was symptomless but had a PCR and + on the 3rd.

So they don't even leave the house until the 13th right?

Ring 111, find the emergency dentist and ask for antibiotics. They might give it. My dentist did during lockdown 1 but he knew I was struggling with a root canal anyway. Worth a try.

Suzi888 · 05/08/2021 18:53

When I had an infection in my wisdom tooth my dentist wouldn’t touch it anyway. They gave me antibiotics and I had to finish the course and go back to have it removed. Could you ring the dentist and ask?

Crunchymum · 05/08/2021 18:56

It's not me but the issue is the person doesn't have a dentist.

I actually had an infection in lockdown #1 and was able to get AB but I went to my regular dentist. Not sure how it works if you don't have a registered dentist.

Also they are self isolating until 13th? So even finding a dentist is pointless?

Call GP,
Prescribe AB over the phone
Pharmacy delivers or a friend picks them up and drops them off

Dodie66 · 05/08/2021 18:59

My GP has prescribed antibiotics in the past when I had an infection and couldn’t get to the dentist. Tell them to try calling theire GP

Crunchymum · 05/08/2021 19:02

I'll get them to try GP, thanks.

Mine won't even grant an appt if you mention its dental but they are with a different practice.

I would get them to call 111.. .My ds has controlled drugs i am a Lp. Perscriptions come from camhs and can't be posted as they are Cd.

I asked what happened if self isolating and we run out of meds there is a procedure for it.

I was also perscribed antibiotics by the dentist during lockdown over the phone.

WrongKindOfFace · 05/08/2021 19:22

Not worth trying GP as they won’t touch it.

111 is the best bet. They can make emergency dental appts and there must be a protocol for people who are isolating.

Crunchymum · 05/08/2021 19:34

OK noted re: GP.

I think I rang mine first when I had an infection last year, and I was told they didn't deal with dental at all.

I'll advise 111.

Sorry for my brevity but I'm annoyed as they were meant to have sorted dentist out (I'd given them details, knew the surgery are taking patients etc) but nope Hmm

I’m sure in the guidance you are allowed to leave home to get emergency medical treatment.

Cornettoninja · 05/08/2021 19:39

111 can access the emergency dentist for the area and make appointments so they should be able to organise a phone consult at least. Given the current difficulties I would guess a dentist is more likely to issue antibiotics without a face to face appointment.

AHobbyaweek · 05/08/2021 19:41

I have had this recently and called 111 and they got an emergency dentist to call me and they prescribed me antibiotics which someone brought to me from the pharmacy.

Crunchymum · 05/08/2021 19:45

@Lemons1571

I’m sure in the guidance you are allowed to leave home to get emergency medical treatment.
But to actually see a dentist?

I'm not sure?

You can leave home during contact isolation for a while host of reasons medical care being one of them. Its all in the legislation. People are taking this way too seriously, preventing themselves getting medical attention on the off chance they might have covid even when they can do a test?!?

That is really interesting.

Although the person isn't registered to a dentist? (And is isolating with children too)

Sorry I feel like I'm drip feeding here. Person in question and her children stayed with the person who had the + result on 1st and 2nd. So 48/24 hours before the +

It's all so confusing.

I had an infection in a tooth and like a PP had to have antibiotics and had the tooth out after infection had cleared up so that will be at least a week anyway

orangejumpsuit · 05/08/2021 23:46

Phone NHS24 and the dental triage team should put you through to a dentist. Most likely they will try and issue analgesics/anyibiotics. If it's a serious dental emergency such as bleeding, trauma, infection so big as to potentially block airways, they have a red pathway they can follow, which means the Covid positive patient can still be seen face to face. This case doesn't sound like the cases above but they will be able to help.

BluebellsGreenbells · 05/08/2021 23:55

They need to find an emergency dentist or a dental hospital to call and ask for antibiotics

Balloonrace · 06/08/2021 00:31

My friend's gf got antibiotics from his dentist despite not being registered with then previously (private dentist). She registered with them after that.

Crunchymum · 06/08/2021 07:57

Thanks for all the ideas.

They've been trying 111 since 7am (engaged). If no joy then are going to try their old dentist / see if they can register for a new dentist to receive AB prior to seeing someone in person.
