Breastfeeding newborn - get vaccine

iloveicelollies · 05/08/2021 12:56

Just that really, looking for experiences of those who got vaccine while breastfeeding newborn. Worried about side effects like period returning too quick, losing milk production or baby getting unwell and the general unknown. Not anti vac and do want protection, but anxious.

Baby is 3 weeks and 2 days and was born 37 weeks. He's quite little. Less than 7lbs.

Husband very skeptical of MNRA vaccines (he's not anti vacc, just worried of long term effects). He won't object to me getting vaccinated or stop me as he's pro my choice. But I'm sure he'd prefer I wait.

My dad saying he won't visit till I'm vaccinated at least with one jab. Though don't know how long he will have to wait for dh to have his. Dh convinced novavax will be approved in Q4 and wants to have that.

Please be gentle with me. Don't want thread to turn into anti vacc bashing of dh. Just providing a context.

Looking specifically for experienced as stated in opening paragraph. Thanks in advance

The risk of passing on, not worth

Do you mean he wakes up often, or that he doesn't have a lot of actual hours sleeping?

iloveicelollies · 07/08/2021 11:21

He only sleeps on me. With two other children who I need to care for and take to summer clubs etc thats not always possible.
I'd say he's sleeping about 6-7 hours in 24 which i worry isn't enough. I'm not a co-sleeper either. He's very small (under 3rd centile) so feel it's too risky that I'll roll on him.

6-7 hours is very little, that sounds really hard for you. Has he seen a doctor to check for any causes like allergies / GERD or sleep apnea?

Had Pfizer when DD was 2wks old. Zero side effects for either of us or on my milk production. I had it as soon as humanly possible to pass on protection to my baby through my milk.
A friend just died of Covid whilst dithering about whether to get the vaccine or not. I think it's really bloody stupid taking the REAL risk of Covid when there's very good vaccines available.

Also DD was 9th centile and also under 7lbs. Crap sleeper too. Even more reason to protect her for me.

By the way, I coslept (poor DH turfed out) and used a sling with a clingy one. Luckily he was bigger and slept a lot, but he only slept attached when he was little and at least at night it meant a good long sleep for both of us. It's very hard, but I do think some babies are clingier than others without anything being wrong with them, they just need that extra reassurance of touching. If you're letting him stay attached and he still doesn't sleep then I'd think it might be more of a physical cause.

I've had midwife and health visitor appointments all cancelled due to covid in last 2 weeks. Have both scheduled for next week and will talk to them about what might be going on in terms of tummy trouble keeping him awake. He does manage to sleep on me thankfully and I just let him do that yesterday and this morning as he needs to be rested to eat properly. I just made myself stay awake with Netflix and coffee!!!! I've managed to get him down in Moses basket this morning for the end of this nap which I feel is a big achievement. Even though he's waking up.
It's very reassuring that all bf vaccinating experiences on here are positive. I'll be getting it soon as I can get some time away from baby to do so.

@mrex I think he is Clingy and needs comfort. He was born 37 weeks so don't know if being early affects things. Other two were overdue and great newborn sleepers. Dh is also turfed out which makes me sad as missing each other. First time slept apart in 16 years other than when he's been on long business trips abroad. It's right thing to do though as two sleep deprived parents does not a happy family make. Dh is cool with us all going into city centre today so I can go to a walk in vaccine clinic and meet them after nearby but I'm nervous about risk of us all In town as well. Lack of sleep making me overly anxious.

I took dc with me both times in the sling. Figured I couldn’t leave them but also wanted the jab. The people at the vaccination centre were totally fine with me taking them and she second time dh and I went together so we took the big one with us too and no one batted an eyelid. Lots of people took kids with them.
Well done on deciding to have the jab!!

iloveicelollies · 07/08/2021 12:28

@Ohshitiveturnedintomymother ok this changes everything. I assumed there was no chance you could take your child with you.

Oh poor you! My boy would (still often does!) sleep curled into me, both of us on our sides facing. So he could touch me and was physically on the bed with his sheet over him, while I could sleep and had the duvet over my hips.
Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 07/08/2021 12:45

I did too, but as they were a week old the first time I chanced it and was fine! I think they’d rather you took kids and got the jab

iloveicelollies · 07/08/2021 16:43

Well done, I hope you don't get many side effects. Good luck with the little one. I also recommend setting up a safe cosleeping space where you feed him lying on your side to keep you both safe in case you fall asleep, rather than trying not to sleep with the baby lying on you.

@MRex thank you. Will try that
