What's safer? Train or taxi?

Just that really.
What's safer for a ride to the airport? Taxi or the train?

Do taxi drivers still wear masks and test on a regular basis?

Taxi I think. Regarding masks, my driver wasn't wearing one the other week.

But if you're going on a plane I'm not sure there's much point worrying about the transport there!

lurker101 · 03/08/2021 18:45

I would think either would be fine now, BBC article yesterday on lack of Covid found in trains/stations

Erm is this a joke?

DogsSausages · 03/08/2021 18:50

Ask your local taxi company what precautions they are taking, do they have masks, screen, open windows.

AdriannaP · 03/08/2021 18:51

Definitely taxi.

ElizabethG81 · 03/08/2021 18:52

Are you going on a plane? If you are, then I wouldn't be stressing about taxi vs train Smile

nocoffeenobooze · 03/08/2021 18:54

To the airport?? 😂 😂 That's hilarious. 8/10

Madcats · 03/08/2021 18:58

We're all sat at home on day 11 of what has become 15 days of isolation. DH almost certainly caught it at the airport arrivals/baggage retrieval (double vaccinated).

That's a very specific claim. How could you possibly know?
FreshFreesias · 03/08/2021 19:06

Oh dear.

Peachi82 · 03/08/2021 19:08

No, it's not a joke.
I am not going on holiday but travelling due to family matters.

How far will you be travelling, what airport.

Thank you for sharing this link, very interesting

Peachi82 · 03/08/2021 19:10

Roughly 25 minutes. My flight is not in rush hour.

You can’t possibly know this
VaguelyInteresting · 03/08/2021 19:13

@Peachi82

It’s an interesting question.

If you get an Uber, mask, and have open windows I think that would be relatively low risk in one way (chances of that one driver having covid probably something like 1 in 75 (depending on where you live! That was the national average number of people
With covid a little while ago).

On the train, if you can properly distance etc. Probably low risk in a different way given the results of the swabbing someone mentioned up thread - but beware - I got a train at the weekend and in 4 full carriages I saw 3 people (including myself) wearing masks.

DogsSausages · 03/08/2021 19:13

I would prefer a taxi, it's more comfortable anyway because I hate lugging bags around. I would be more worried about the airport and the plane, is it a long flight.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/08/2021 19:13

@Peachi82

Roughly 25 minutes. My flight is not in rush hour.
But you will be in an enclosed space with lots of other people so it seems odd to be more concerned about getting in a taxi.
Peachi82 · 03/08/2021 19:17

The flight is 2 hours.

It's not that I'm not concerned about the flight. However people are either double jabbed (which I know doesn't mean that they can't have or transmit it) or tested and mask wearing is a must.

A full train carriage with unmasked people would be horror to me.

I have a 4 hour train journey after arriving but the numbers there are low and government insists on Ffp2 masks.

Taxi with the window wide open and your head sticking out.

IcedPurple · 03/08/2021 19:21

In which case it's pretty obvious that a taxi is the better option for you, surely?

nordica · 03/08/2021 19:43

If it's outside of rush hour, the trains may not be that busy?

I've been using trains a couple of times a week since April and they feel safe for the most part, especially during quieter times when you can keep your distance from others and open a small window above your seat. If you sit near the doors, the air also circulates quite well when they open at stations (if it's a train route with regular stops, obviously).

I think sharing a car (taxi) is riskier as it's a smaller space, although statistically chances of the taxi driver having covid are probably much smaller than coming across someone on a train who has covid so it all evens out really...

If you are concerned in general, get some FFP2 masks. They protect the wearer much better as they fit tighter, although I actually find them more comfortable to wear as well as it's more of a cup shape and doesn't touch my lips or move when I talk.

Peachi82 · 03/08/2021 20:05

I see the trains going past from my house, I will pay attention to how full they are at the time I'll be travelling next week.

I am wearing FFP2 masks when I'm out since October last year.

As an occupant of a car, you have a 1 in 632 chance of being the victim of a fatal crash.

Meanwhile, as a train passenger the odds lengthen considerably to 1 in nearly 244,000.

Exact odds may differ depending on your source of stats but the general difference is the same.

With all that said, I'd disregard the safety considerations and pick whichever was most convenient for me in the specific situation.

RobinPenguins · 03/08/2021 20:14

Train, depending on the route. I’ve been taking the train 3 times a week all the time since lockdown 1 and I’ve never been as close to anyone as I would be in a taxi. Obviously if it’s a busy route that may be different.
