Does anyone currently planning to go on holiday worth about what they will do if they fail their fit to fly to come home?

Perhaps I am over-thinking but am wrestling with this issue re a possible trip to Spain. Say you have a villa, it’s time to leave, you all do a fit to return test and one of the party is positive. What then?

The U.K. travel website has some rather sinister stuff about the Spanish government needing to know where you will quarantine, even mentioning quarantine hotels and similar, but even leaving that aside, one would have to leave the villa, so where to then? Presumably hotels don’t want positive people pitching up?

Should one have a fallback plan?

It will depend I guess. A poster last week on here had that happen and they were isolating in the hotel, but in a separate room to her DH who was the positive one. Also she said insurance only covered his room not hers. So you’re right to consider this as it does happen. My friend works for an insurance company who helps Brits in trouble abroad and she said so many people were shocked this had happened. But of course there’s a chance of catching it on holiday. You’d probably be sent to a hotel if using a Villa, not sure how you’d find that info in advance but your best bet is checking your insurance will cover the cost of everyone in your party to isolate for 10 days and new flights home for all. It is a worry, we aren’t sure if we are going to go away end of august, complicated by fact we all have Covid now

ArtandCoTwin · 01/08/2021 23:48

There are ‘COVID’ hotels in Spain & one in each of Balearic Islands. There are separate floors for positive and negative (close contacts) apparently. It’s difficult to find out much info though.

Also bear in mind that if you catch COVID on holidays (ie test positive as you suggest) you can continue testing positive for a further 12 weeks. This is apparently more likely with PCR tests than LFTs but given school kids were exempt from doing LFTs for 3 months post infection (due to false positive results) it’s obviously an issue with both types of tests. I’ve asked about this on another thread as the Government, BA, EasyJet etc websites ALL say you must produce a negative test to board a plane to England. No exemptions. No ‘I’ve had covid, isolated for ten days so no longer contagious but will test positive due to harmless fragments’ type of pass. Or not that I can find anywhere. Which is madness!

And it is precisely the prospect of this situation which has made us push our holiday (Greece in 2 weeks) back to July next year. The island that we were going to has extremely low cases, and is not one of the big islands with loads of flights going in, so more limited scope for cases to come in, but me and DH couldn't relax for two weeks worrying that our test might come back positive.

AuditAngel · 02/08/2021 09:23

We are in Spain at the moment, but our extended family own a couple of flats so accommodation isn’t a worry.

It is also possible to travel on a “certificate of recovery” if you have had Corona. Having been on the Spanish Government site to complete the health forms this is an option and I appears on links from both EasyJet and BA sites

Revengeofthepangolins · 02/08/2021 09:57

Thanks - really interesting. And certificate of recovery sounds promising

@AuditAngel where does it say this on the BA site please? Any chance you can link? England isn’t allowing them for entry as far as I know. Spain and other EU countries are. Maybe you’ve looked at BA and Easyjet INTO Spain rather than into England? I’m hoping I’m wrong and you’re right!

This was updated today and says the ‘recovery certificate’ is not available to Britons. Damn!

Currently in that situation! Came to the US from UK to visit my parents and extended family. I took precautions but also let the kids play with all of their US cousins.

One family of cousins (Mother and Daughter) had recently come back from Orlando and although they tested (negative) before coming around the larger group, they started getting symptoms approx 5 days later.

Unfortunately by that time, the kids had been in super close contact including sleepovers over a 48-hour period.

Now my kids are + as are the mother and daughter. We were due to fly back to the UK on Tuesday and are now here for at least another 10 days.

Luckily the kids aren't that ill (presenting like a summer cold with sinus pressure, dizziness, fatigue, ear ache and fever as the symptoms).

Because we're staying with family, we don't have to worry about funding/finding another 10 days accommodation. I also have another two weeks off work.

To be honest, this has changed how I feel about travelling abroad with unvaccinated people.

How do you even budget for this circumstance?

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/08/2021 00:38

I agree little seems to be reported on this, these are other countries rules, as well as flights and needs more exposure. The cost alone would be prohibitive and who wants two weeks locked up with no outside space in another country?

It’s like people have forgotten all the cancelled flights that left people stranded for weeks elsewhere at their own cost.

NammeChannge · 03/08/2021 02:43

Even in the UK I'm thinking that we don't want to be an 8 hour drive from home if DH and I were to get it badly and have to drive home.

Watapalava · 03/08/2021 07:15

I was in Ibiza last week

Everyone I know/met there took the nhs lateral tests to test before their official test to return. The consensus was:

If positive they’d extend their trip and semi isolate and not bother doing proper test - so stay in resort with no one officially knowing they’re positive

Many weren’t doing test properly - my dd hated the school ones they did and said it never once touched her nose even under supervision

Many were doing photo upload tests and video conferencing - much easier to cheat. Our tui tests just involved a photo- if one of us had been postive on nhs test then someone else could have done test for that person

There are actually ways round the testing positive if you’re desperate enough to avoid it

Watapalava · 03/08/2021 07:17

As for costs generally - this is why no one currently should be travelling without operator

Operators currently cover hotel and new flights if you test postive and fly all guests home in event of red list change

Flight only etc don’t have those Abta obligations but that’s what you risk for reducing cost of booking separate

Serenissima21 · 03/08/2021 07:28

Does anyone know if you are allowed to drive back if someone is positive and you don't stop on the way? (Not to the UK but neighbouring EU countries).

Remmy123 · 03/08/2021 08:48

We are going to book a last minute holiday after the new travel announcement for a week only. I am worried of a positive return test but I can imagine next year will be the same.

Mreggsworth · 03/08/2021 09:03

@Watapalava

You've just listed reasons why covid continued to spread

Fantastic, so everyone can bring back the latest covid variant from their holiday and infect others on the plane on the way home too so it really spreads around.

ruumis · 03/08/2021 13:35

I have to admit I have been thinking what to do if I get positive lft before my booked pcr. I definitely have to remove myself from my elderly parents place.

lisaw75 · 03/08/2021 17:59

I was so tempted to book menorca next week, both us are double vaxed and girls are 10.
I know we could minimise the risk on holiday, but just that slight chance of catching it and not being able to get home let alone be stuck in one of those quarintine hotels is to scary. Everyone now again I do get tempted though
