I went to a festival today and a condition of entry was a negative lateral flow test. I’d never done one before so had no idea how it works.

I was slightly bemused to realise that you do the test, then scan the QR code and choose an option online as to what result you got. Mine was negative, btw.

But surely, if someone had tickets to a festival or other event that they really wanted to go to, they would just skip the test entirely, scan the code and choose negative on the website, or enter negative even if they got a positive result? Of course not everyone would, some people would think oh I’ll stay at home then, but my point is the tests prove absolutely nothing other than that person’s honesty, unless I’m missing something?

Yup, this has been mentioned a little on the media before. Unless they get people to test in front of them on arrival, anyone could just fake a negative result to get in if they wanted to. I guess you have to rely on human decency.

I was saying, with regard to all the holiday testing that's required, I wonder how many people don't even stick it up their nose so as not to risk a positive?

Yep, it's just relying on human honesty.. same for lateral flow tests in schools and workplaces unless you're actually doing them then and there and showing someone else the result. It's a bit of a flawed system but I don't see an alternative really.
