Do we have to SI whilst waiting for PCR result for adult DD?

DD(19) has today got symptoms of a sore throat and headache - no coughing, no loss of taste/smell, no temp - so none of the big 3 symptoms. Was staying at boyfriends house last night so has literally gone straight upstairs n will stay there. We've actually had no close contact with her for the last 3 days as she's resumed her social life so has literally been in n out.

She's had PCR test this lunch and will obv isolate from us until results, so I'm not sure if we need to SI aswell? I'm finding the rules far more complicated as time goes on and can't seem to find a definitive answer online!

(I'll probably get any number of different answers on here!) Sorry, I know it's a numbingly boring question, but tia

Yes all of you do

DGFB · 29/07/2021 14:07

Yes

LadyPenelope68 · 29/07/2021 14:08

Yes, definitely

Porcupineintherough · 29/07/2021 14:09

As I understand it you dont as she has none of the 3 symptoms (fever, cough, loss of smell/taste) that requires a pcr test. Not that I'm saying she was wrong to take one as this list is somewhat out of date.

Motorina · 29/07/2021 14:10

No, legally. She doesn’t have any of the big 3 so none of you, including her, need to SI.

In your shoes I’d be as careful as possible though, just in case.

PurpleDaisies · 29/07/2021 14:11

No-she doesn’t have any of the official covid symptoms. Technically she shouldn’t have done the PCR test.

It would be best to be super careful about who you see and maintaining social distancing though.

Pissinthepottyplease · 29/07/2021 14:16

No, because she doesn’t have any of symptoms which mean you have to isolate.

NursieBernard · 29/07/2021 14:16

Yes the whole household needs to isolate until she gets a negative result. If she has been vaccinated the symptoms won't necessarily be the 'big 3'. We are currently isolating as DD (20) had a positive PCR test but says it just feels like a head cold with some dizziness.

tactum · 29/07/2021 14:24

See, it's as clear as mud!

She's had a negative lateral flow at home this am, but decided to get a PCR as she works in healthcare, otherwise she wouldn't have taken one and we'd all be trundling along as normal.

Can any of the people saying the household must isolate link to official guidance to back that up?

PurpleDaisies · 29/07/2021 14:26

The situation is clear if you look at the nhs and government sites. She doesn’t have the symptoms that mean anyone (including her) needs to isolate and get a PCR test.

There’s a big argument to say those symptoms should be updated but it’s clear at the moment you don’t have to isolate.

CagneyNYPD · 29/07/2021 14:32

She does have any of the core symptoms. She tested negative on a LFT. She does not actually require a PCR test but I understand why she has taken one. Did she say that she has got symptoms in order to get a PCR?

tactum · 29/07/2021 14:36

I'm not sure CagneyNYPD, possibly when booking the appt online. When she has had to have a PCR in the past she certainly hasn't been asked at the test site.

Thanks PurpleDaisies, after having a better look online I can see that following the NHS guidance we don't have to SI. Will obviously be careful.

Was thinking if we had to until result came back then surely boyfriend's family and the 20 or so friends she's seen over the last few days should aswell, as she's had closer contact with them! In which case the country would clearly grind to even more of a halt than now!!

I don't think so as she doesn't have one of the main symptoms . Sounds like she is being super cautious which is good. If she is happy to stay in her room, given that you haven't seen her in your shoes I would carry on as normal until she hopefully has a negative test result.

tactum · 30/07/2021 14:30

Just in case anyone is interested......PCR came back an hour ago as positive, so we're all shut away now! Symptoms have developed overnight anyway, so we had a fair idea.

Interestingly I'm hearing so much anecdotal evidence of negative LF followed by positive PCRs - not sure I trust them! 4 of her friends have had the same - she literally had an hour between the two tests.

Take care all of you, hope it passes quickly.

Lupinhere37 · 30/07/2021 16:46

Op; hope you’re all ok. My friend had hayfever symptoms and wife was asymptomatic but decided to do PCR as someone they’d been with at work with four days earlier tested positive.
Two LFTs at home negative.
Test centre told them they hadn’t even needed a test and definitely didn’t need to isolate. Guess what; both have tested positive although feeling fine by the time the results came back.
This whole thing is just farcical; the direction to test should be extended massively to broader symptoms.

Sorry to hear this, I hope she is feeling better soon. This illustrates why they need to update that list of symptoms eligible for a test. People have to lie.
