If you have a PCR test for travel and it's positive how long should you wait before trying again?

Just that really, our kids are doing a PCR test for travel tomorrow and I'm worried my son might be positive as he's been socialising with friends a lot sometimes in houses.
If it was to be positive how long is it likely to be before he would be likely to test negative?

I’m assuming he hasn’t had covid before, then it’s usually a 90 day wait before testing again. However, you can use the first positive PCR as proof of covid and travel once outside of quarantine and feeling better.

Darbs76 · 28/07/2021 14:01

As mentioned they don’t like you to retest within 90 days but sure you can if for travel. I’m testing negative now on LFT’s on day 14 post Covid, obviously not done a PCR but you can get a recovery certificate for some countries as you can keep testing positive

If his positive then the WHOLE house has to stay home for atleast 10 days

This is not about you being able to travel

This is about your household spreading it around!

The OP a doesn’t mention symptoms so at the moment there is no need quarantine unless he gets a positive result.

If he does get a positive then the household needs to quarantine for 10 days and he will need a certificate of recovery which I have no idea how to get but someone started a thread asking about it the other day.

It’s statically more likely that he will test negative. Travelling in this time is so nerve wracking.

Bit of an overreaction there. Any reason at all to think the OP doesn’t know the isolation rules?

I’m not sure how getting a Covid test in order to safely travel can not be about about travelling Confused that’s literally the reason for the test.

DD's friend tested positive in her pre departure test (she was returning to the UK having worked abroad for a year.)
She tested negative 11 days later and was able to fly.

Many places now accept a certificate/official form that says you have had covid in the past 3 months, alongside the covid pass (fully vaccinated +2 weeks or proof of negative test.)

In Greece you can't travel if you have had a positive test less than 30 days from the day of travel.

Oh, so if you go on holiday to Greece, test positive when you do your pcr before returning to the UK you have to spend at least another 30 days in Greece?

Where did the OP suggest they wouldn’t isolate? Confused
Movinghouseatlast · 28/07/2021 16:47

No, if you go to Greece and you have had a positive test less than 30 days ago you go to a quarentine hotel for 10 days.

The positive test has to be more than 30 days before you travel. You can take proof of a positive test to be allowed in.

It is because you can still show positive antibodies 90 days after a positive test- so they are accepting that if you were positive 30 days ago you are OK to be in the country as you are not infectious.

If you test positive on arrival they send you to a quarentine hotel- they do random or whole plane testing on arrival.

Secretsout · 28/07/2021 16:48

It can stay positive for 90 days so you're not advised to retest during this time. If you do retest and it comes back positive you have to assume new infection and start the isolation again.
