9 months after CV19 still got anosmia (smell loss)-anyone else?

Had mild CV19 in October. Headaches, sore throat , loss of smell, loss of taste. Confirmed through 2 PCRs

My smell didn't come back. Until January I had nothing.

By March I could smell if there was a smell but not what it was. So dirty nappies, washing powered, perfume, BBQ all have the same non distinct slightly fatty smell.

Have also lost my sense of temperature change, which must be smell related. Stepping out of the house on a cold January morning- no rush of cold and similarly in the heat- no blast of heat. I may never experience that warm rush getting off a plane again.

The GP said- everyone is the same after CV19. It will come back.

5 months later it still hasn't.

Is anyone else the same?

My smell took about 9 months to return intermittently. But probably a full year to lose the fantom smells and to be able to smell everything and rely on my smell sense. Weird with the temperature thing. Looking back I think I might of experienced that.

I'm over a year on from losing mine and certain smells are still completely different (mostly repulsive). Fruits like satsuma and banana smell vile. I can't go near my children if they are eating sweets because the smell is so rancid.

For 9 months after I had covid I smelt a strong smell of smoke persistently. I also couldn’t taste food as much and some things were completely flavourless for all that time. Seemed to get better after about the 9 month mark.

Yellowhighheels · 27/07/2021 14:04

Similar here, except I'm not sure about the temperature issue.

Had covid late autumn, first symptom I noticed was complete anosmia.

Now I can tell if theres a strong smell, things like cigarette smoke have a strong, burning sugar like smell. It's quite sickly.

There are variants on this depending on the smell but generally smells are sweet, greasy and smoky.

I can taste the basics- sweet sour, salty, bitter and umami but couldn't really distinguish what something is except by texture, or if it has a distinctive combo of say, sweet, sour and bitter such as orange seems to.

Mild vegetables like lettuce, courgette, peppers and cucumber taste horrible and sulphurous. Garlic is strong but unrecognisable.

I have been using beconase spray for almost 2 months. I think there is some progress in that I am picking up that there is a smell sometimes at least but am getting a bit worried now that it's been so long.

MySecretHistory · 27/07/2021 14:12

Beconase is interesting- did the GP recommend it?

Mine just said- yes I have lost mine too- isn't it weird. Which wasn't overly helpful.

Yes they did- they said to expect to have to use it for 2-3 months to see any effect.

Ha no, not very helpful! I'd make another appointment and request the spray. Can't say for certain it's helping but it might be part of what's slowing improving things

Yep 6 months on and smell and taste powers are still intermittent...

Acupuncture helps a bit but it’s not a panacea.

Yellowhighheels · 27/07/2021 15:07

Interesting about acupuncture- what did you ask for (I know nothing about it!), and how many sessions etc?

Darbs76 · 27/07/2021 15:22

Dreading that happening to me. I’m 13 days on from Covid, I can taste strong flavours like garlic but nothing else. Smell has come back slightly but largely still gone

RestingStitchFace · 27/07/2021 15:40

Mine came back after about 2 weeks. Not saying that to brag - just you wanted to know if everyone was the same. I don't think so. I think COVID is a very diverse illness that affects people in different ways.

On the flip side, 10months later and I still have dreadful tinnitus....

Dancedancedancedancedance · 29/07/2021 00:59

@Yellowhighheels I just told the acupuncturist about the Covid ... It improved after each of the sessions. It’s still in and out but I can taste more of my meals now!

SpeakingFranglais · 29/07/2021 02:48

A good five months for mine to return and it was Tony tiny steps with no improvement for weeks at a time.

Now I cam smell most things again but cat food still smells really acidic and chemically. It’s the one thing that smells nothing like it did pre-Covid.
