COVID restrictions on days out

I’ve just visited an attraction aimed at families. I don’t want to name in case IABU. So to enter the facility, you need to book online. Your digital ticket is scanned on entry from your phone. Great nice and easy.

But when we arrived we found that additional wristbands could be purchased to allow children on rides. So we queue to purchase to find out that the wristbands can only be put on by the staff. So staff are touching each child to put on the bands. No hand sanitizer in sight.

Is it just me or is this bonkers? Why insist on contactless entry to then do this?

We’re planning a few other fun days out this week and I’m worried this is a mistake. There was absolutely no social distancing on rides or shows and nothing was wiped down that I observed.

I’m all for sensible precautions to allow everything to open back up, but is this the norm now?

You’ll get the polar opposite of reaction on here from we have to live with it to this is why I’m never going out again and everything in between.

Personally this is why I’m waiting a while to see what happens with the figures. I have no expectation that any venue will do more than as little as possible.

Quartz2208 · 27/07/2021 08:27

You are assuming that contactless entry is a coronavirus thing I think more and more things were going that way anyway

Some places have even gone out of their way to reduce covid mitigations e.g. Pret taking out the perspex screens at the cash registers.

OP - that is madness, if that member of staff catches covid (which seems quite likely) then every kid they've put a wristband on for 48 hours (or more if symptoms start as e.g. a headache) will be a contact. That's possibly hundreds of holidays ruined if nothing else and would be terrible PR even if nobody gets seriously ill because of it.

Flowerlane · 27/07/2021 08:33

We have visited 2 well known theme parks in the last 2 weeks. There has been no covid restrictions in place in either of them apart from limited numbers in the swimming pool.

Everything was pretty much back to normal. We had a great time and none of us have come
down with covid.

parrotonmyshoulder · 27/07/2021 08:38

The restrictions have been lifted. So any place that does have them may be being respectful of their staff and customers, using their own sense, and trying to keep things safer. But they don’t have to.

Biscusting · 27/07/2021 08:50

@Maybeitstime2021 yes I think I’m coming to the same thinking as you on this one. There are still a lot of people not fully vaccinated, surely keeping the basic precautions as still important.

OP posts:
Biscusting · 27/07/2021 09:06

@QueenStromba that was my thinking too. The staff member has very visibly dirty hands (maybe because they work with animals? Perhaps just part of the job!?) It was clear hand hygiene was low on the list. But along with COVID, I didn’t fancy noravirus or any other bugs either.

On the flip side - shielding from social contact for too long will effect people immune systems (no drip feed of viruses and bacteria equals an ill equipped immune system) - ESPECIALLY for the children.
Be aware that kids pick up on all this "don't touch", I do fear for an even more anxious health fear obsessed generation.

Katie517 · 27/07/2021 09:20

Unless your child then went on to lick their wrist after being touched by the member of staff I don’t see what the issue is. Surface transmission is incredibly rare and you are also assuming the member of staff has covid which believe it or not not every stranger does. Restrictions are lifted covid measures cost money and time to businesses that are already struggling so unfortunately it’s a case of being comfortable with this or not going to those places.

How do you put a wristband on a child without getting within a meter of them?
Biscusting · 27/07/2021 10:56

Do you actually end up with a weakened immune system from not contracting regular respiratory and diarrhoeal illnesses? I thought that was more of a herd immunity thing. I’m okay with washing my hands regularly.

Ironically, ice cream dripped into my DDs wristband, she licked it off. I screamed inwardly. We had a lovely day

How do you put a wristband on a child without getting within a meter of them? Cos you don't have to be a meter away from them anymore do you?

People who have this complete aversion to dirt and bugs are going to be a zillion times worse now. We need exposure to these things to boost our immune system response. Bonkers to sanitize ourselves into oblivion, I'd just be pleased you can do all this stuff again.

bigbluebus · 27/07/2021 11:41

I don't think a brief interaction like that would bother me. I have, however, just trawled my town centre looking for a barber who is wearing a face mask so that single jabbed DS and double jabbed, but works with vulnerable people DH, can get a haircut. Out of 5 barbers shops, in 3 there was no evidence of masks, one I couldn't see if they were or weren't and one was wearing a mask as was the customer and the door was wide open. I know which one they'll be going to. Cases have been increasing in our town and these are people who spend at least 15 minutes in close contact with 10's of people each day - idea vectors for spreading Covid.

Covid doesn't care if it's within the rules or not and neither does test and trace.
Overthebow · 27/07/2021 12:19

There’s no restrictions anymore. Up to people whether they are comfortable to go to places given that there’s now no social distancing. Going with personal responsibility, surely what should have happened is the child using hand gel on hand, arm and wrist band.

TerritorialPissings · 27/07/2021 12:33

I don’t really care either way on whether the restrictions are in place, but what I cannot abide is the double standards which are rife everywhere (noticeable particularly at attractions just as you describe). Queue closely together for a ride, no masks needed….get on ride where you are miles apart from anyone as they’ve taped up every other seat, and masks are suddenly needed.

Many, if not all, restrictions have just been for show.

Cookerhood · 27/07/2021 12:41

Licking wouldn't transmit anything anyway, it's a airborne respiratory disease (but I get your point!)

Biscusting · 27/07/2021 12:50

Absolutely 100% @TerritorialPissings. We were crammed together indoors to watch a show and I mean crammed. People filtered in gradually so you couldn’t predict how busy it would get until a few min before. Then outside the benches are taped up. It’s just bizarre now
