He’s had a PCR test this morning to be on the safe side, how unreliable are LFT’s? We are meant to be going to a hotel for a few days this week for a much needed break. Really hoping our annual leave won’t be wasted isolating 😩

I currently have a stinky cold and negative LFT.

Just started a sporadic cough but it’s because any cold kicks my asthma into overdrive. Considering a PCR test tomorrow

No, sorry I might have confused the posts.

Welsh government say:

To get a PCR you need the 3 main symptoms. They ask at booking if you have them, if you don't have them you are not eligible to be tested.

To get a lateral flow you need to fit in to the list of catagories listed. If you don't fit in, you don't get a lateral flow test.

LFT is about 50% accurate if you have symptoms & get a negative result
It's 99% accurate if you don't have symptoms and get a positive result.

So basically once you have cold symptoms (which Delta is presenting with), you need a PCR

Toottootdrivers · 23/07/2021 22:18

My DB got a positive PCR this morning. Before that he had 10 negative LFTS

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 23/07/2021 22:19

Need one or more of the 3 main symptoms*

That should have read.

silkmonkey · 23/07/2021 22:20

Once you have symptoms the viral load drops so LFT less likely to pick up and show positive.

LFTs are for when you are pre-symptoms.

If you have symptoms then you take a PCR

Go into Boots or Lloyd's and pick up a box of LFTs. I qualified on the basis of working outside the home. They are not being publicised as available over the counter but they are (SE Wales)

Ds’s LFT was positive within 2hrs of him starting to cough. I tested negative for 3 days, despite the start of symptoms. Then I had 2 very faint positives before PCR confirmed positive (then a very clear LFT the same day as positive PCR)

What?! That's crazy! We can just order them online! What a faff!
TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 23/07/2021 22:35

So I just walk in ask for a box I don't qualify for and then randomly test myself in my house. Why?

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 23/07/2021 22:36

Aii, now you know why Wales positive results are so low compared to the rest of the UK. We don't really test.

YogaLite · 23/07/2021 22:38

I thought we were told all adults should do LFT twice a week? I do mine once a week.

99victoria · 23/07/2021 23:20

It wouldn't occur to me to test if I had cold symptoms. As a household we haven't done lfts or PCRs. We've had a few tests recently as we have been on holiday abroad - all negative obviously, But we haven't been doing regular testing of any kind

VaguelyInteresting · 23/07/2021 23:43

But the information is literally everywhere you look that the Delta variant is presenting like a head cold - particularly in vaccinated people?

Why WOULDN'T you "lie" to get a test, if the other option is "follow the rules but potentially spread covid amongst colleagues and loved ones"

Are we following government rules SO mindlessly now, that we won't exercise our critical thinking and go with that, rather than the nonsensical govt bollocks, that not even they pretend to actually follow?

So now I am to follow some rules, but not other rules, but do this, but don't do that. Lie for this but don't lie for that. Follow the government advice about this, but not that.

I'll just follow the rules, I do follow the rules. Hands, face, space. Isolate and test when needed. Limit social contact to bubbles.

I'm not going to lie and neurotically test myself over every runny nose, sore throat or headache. You can't live like this, not for the remainder of your life which Covid will be around for now, covid and it's multiple variants is not going to go away sadly.

Hamnetssister · 24/07/2021 02:23

Dd had a sore throat, that was her only symptom. I don’t know why they haven’t updated the list of three symptoms yet.
