Why aren't more countries not allowing UK visitors?

With the UK currently topping the global charts with daily cases, what I don't understand is why aren't more countries basically saying that we can't visit from here without serious quarantining etc?

I know Australia, New Zealand and Japan are being super strict but why on earth are places like Greece, Croatia, Spain, Portugal etc seemingly happy to have us?

You listed three countries who won't accept tourists from anywhere. There are still loads of countries who won't accept tourists from the UK.

Money?

Ok vaccination roll out?

santanddec · 20/07/2021 18:12

Countries like Greece, Spain, Portugal etc.. rely on tourists from the UK so that's why they haven't banned us yet!

I expect we'll be on many more 'red lists' by August if our case numbers rise as predicted- but I guess it also depends on what sort of approach other countries take e.g. I suspect a lot of them will try the English-style 'let it rip' reopening once they've made more progress with vaccinations. The issue is the vaccination rates though - they are much lower in other European countries and Delta is already causing issues- so they may have no choice but to reintroduce restrictions to save their health services from being overwhelmed.

As frozendaisy said money…or in other words the economy.

Tourist economies involved so I’d guess it has been decided that the benefit of Brits arriving and spending money outweighs the potential costs associated with a possible increase in local Covid cases at some point in the not so distant future.

starfro · 20/07/2021 18:28

Spain has similar numbers to us, and many others are going to within weeks.

Tourism.
Some of them have done an intensive campaign to vaccinate people working in the tourism industry (including teens- waiters, helpers, family let, younameit) as a way to reassure possible guests but also minimise disruption. They’re now going to test if the strategy works.
But of all the nations you list, some have already introduced quarantine even to double vaxxed (Italy). They can still tighten rules if they want…

Dghgcotcitc · 20/07/2021 18:56

Delta is everywhere most of those places have growing rates and the rates will only grow further. They needed to lock out the U.K. in March not now it will make little difference

Acrasia · 20/07/2021 18:57

I was wondering this myself. Especially as the UK are not even allowing non-resident double-vaccinated Brits to enter without restrictions (unless you’re a VIP). No idea when I will be able to come back to see my family and friends.

Tealightsandd · 20/07/2021 18:58

A lot of the people aren't at all happy. Quite understandably.

Desperate need (for tourist income) is not the same as genuine welcome.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/07/2021 19:02

Money. Greece isn't a rich country and they rely very much on British tourism.

ragged · 20/07/2021 19:23

you sound awfully disappointed OP

ISeeTheLight · 20/07/2021 19:28

Belgium isn't. I've emailed my embassy with whole bunch of documents to proof I'm in a relationship with DP so they can give him an essential travel certificate so we can all go and visit my family in a few weeks. Our DD luckily has dual citizenship so doesn't need an ETC.

CuteOrangeElephant · 20/07/2021 19:29

The Netherlands isn't Sad .

SusanBAnthony999 · 20/07/2021 19:49

Because they assess that the benefits from welcoming vaccinated UK tourists with a negative Covid test outweigh the disadvantages.

Ozzie9523 · 20/07/2021 21:27

We’re now on Bulgaria’s red list.

Largethighsbadeyes · 20/07/2021 21:51

Hong Kong won't let anyone from UK in yet they are on our green list (as are Australia and NZ)

TooHotToHoot · 20/07/2021 22:24

Not disappointed at all - it makes no odds to me. Just wondering why the situation is as it is.

UK is only restricting non UK citizens/residents from coming in from red list countries and even then if someone travels to a green or amber list country for 10 days prior to UK arrival they can still enter.
sirfredfredgeorge · 21/07/2021 07:29

Once you've accepted cases, then non local seeding doesn't matter, the harm to individuals not being able to travel (and it's family visits as well as business and tourism) isn't corresponded with any benefit, you've accepted cases, so the cases will happen.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 21/07/2021 08:03

Tourism
Negative PCR ?

Acrasia · 21/07/2021 09:22

That wasn’t what I meant @TheTeenageYears, even double-vaccinated Brits living in green list countries need to isolate under UK rules.
