What's the reasoning behind school kids not having to isolate but only from August?

What is the reasoning school kids don't have to isolate if they are a contact but only from August 19th I think it is?
So why are so many kids isolating now but in a few weeks it changes and they are no longer considered a risk of passing on the virus?
It just seems so stupid
If they are not at risk or less likely to transmit the virus why wouldn't they say from July 19th when restrictions end? Why is it a different date?

Reasoning?
You expect reasoning from this government?

ZNation · 18/07/2021 22:14

I suppose I would have liked to hear Boris waffle on with some weird kind of logic and catchy slogan before looking at Whitty or Van Tam to save him

The plan is for the change to take place in the next school year, rather than this one.

2boysand1princess · 18/07/2021 22:16

Following. I also don’t understand why. What’s the purpose of this?

SexTrainGlue · 18/07/2021 22:16

Vague hope that once pupils are not in school, they won't be passing it round so widely. So all school related transmissions stand a chance of being contained within households

The government won't admit how covid insecure schools are/were.

Or they just chucked a dart at a calendar

Wanttocry · 18/07/2021 22:16

I would not be remotely surprised if that date was chosen by throwing darts at a calendar.

ArmsofOrion · 18/07/2021 22:19

Sure he said it was staying until August to give more time for people to have jabs.

Wanttocry · 18/07/2021 22:21

@ArmsofOrion

It still seems arbitrary though. All adults won’t be offered their second jabs until mid-September.
herecomesthsun · 18/07/2021 22:21

I have no special knowledge at all.

Are there some schools whose term starts end of August?

In which case, they would want a date before those kids go back. Maybe?

Tuba437 · 18/07/2021 22:22

Is it not to coincide with Scottish school children going back?

Abouttimemum · 18/07/2021 22:23

I’d rather it was now if it affects those in nursery through the summer. I can’t deal with any more unnecessary toddler isolation.

TokyoSushi · 18/07/2021 22:26

I think it's to make sure that all schools see through this term with the isolations still in place then new rules for the new term -although goodness knows how long they'll last-

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 18/07/2021 22:29

For the Scottish new school term mid august

BogRollBOGOF · 18/07/2021 22:32

Mid-August is when all of the UK is still on holiday, and doesn't involve late finishers changing protocol in the last week or so of term.

Hopefully the peak should be calming down by then sp the return to school in Aug/ Sept should be with a lower point of cases.

One month from now also reduces the numbers of un/partially vaccinated adults, and the numbers left will be significantlly lower than now which will reduce the capacity for rapid autumn spread.

It doesn’t apply to Scotland. The change in Scotland is planned to come in on 9th August I think.

@Tuba437

Is it not to coincide with Scottish school children going back?
No, as it's the Scottish government who will decide whether they will go down that route. It's not yet confirmed what will happen re schools here yet.
