Moderna Vaccine

Hi,
I received my first dose of Moderna on 28 June and found out I was pregnant last week. I will be due my second dose in a couple of weeks but I am unsure if it is safe to have during pregnancy?

Forums suggest the UK hasnt done enough research and US say it is safe (although I rarely trust that). My information leaflet only mentions not getting the vaccine if you’re trying to get pregnant not if you already are?

All help is welcome thanks

I'm not sure mumsnet is the place to get this medical advice.

I hab my second at 8 weeks pregnant and it's been all fine. Had a scan a week later (due to a previous miscarriage) and embryo is looking good so far.

If you need more reassurance, there are many threads in the pregnancy forum. And you can always approach your midwife/GP/consultant.

This site will be useful in coming to your decision: www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/coronavirus-covid-19-pregnancy-and-womens-health/covid-19-vaccines-and-pregnancy/covid-19-vaccines-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding/. You can also talk to your midwife and any consultant you're under for their advice based on your underlying health.

There doesn't seem to be anything difficult coming out of the US, where there have been a lot more vaccines given in pregnancy than here, including for the obvious reason that their population is much larger. It is generally advised to get jabs in second trimester though, so may be best to wait until 14 weeks for your second dose and just be careful mixing until then. If you only just found out you're pregnant then presumably that will give you a couple more months of data to look at nearer the time, to make a final decision.

I’m 16 weeks and have had one dose (Moderna). I waited until the 2nd trimester (I’m 40 so I was actually called when I was only 5 weeks). Now I really, really, REALLY wish I hadn’t waited so long and just gotten it as soon as I could! I now won’t get my 2nd until the end of August.

As others said there is loads of antecdotal reports here and elsewhere and (most) health professionals strongly recommend it. My midwife didn’t recommend I wait until the 2nd trimester and I wish I had listened.

As far as I am aware there is no medical reason to postpone the vaccine to the second trimester. The reason this is often mentioned is more that if something happens to the embryo, the mother doesn't blame herself for the decision.

The chance of miscarrying in the first trimester is very high, independent whether you have your vaccine or not.

I have decided not to postpone, but to have both of mine as quickly as I could because I am more responsible for my health and to stay healthy for our son. This has more priority than the embryo.

I would get it. Pregnant women are much more at risk of hospital admission with Covid.

My midwife directed me to the RCOG website for the best and most up-to-date advice. I decided to go for it after reading everything. Anecdotally, all my friends who are pregnant have had it and there have been no issues. I'll be double jabbed by the third trimester which personally I'm relieved about. I read a lot of stuff online suggesting pregnant women aren't getting it but irl I haven't seen this (maybe all my friends are just very pro-vax!).
