I’m exempt from wearing a face mask, I got on the bus yesterday and was asked why I wasn’t wearing one by the driver (fair enough I’m not against being asked) however a man get on 2 stops later and he didn’t ask him, why do they ask some people and not others?

I didn't think they were legally allowed to ask why! Sorry this happened Thanks

Maybe he knew the man as a regular passenger?

ColettesEarrings · 18/07/2021 11:59

Because you're a woman and unlikely to smack him one is the honest answer. Patriarchy and self preservation is alive and well.

PumpkinKlNG · 18/07/2021 12:00

Doubt it was that he knew him

Exactly this ^

Might be a regular?

PumpkinKlNG · 18/07/2021 15:39

I’m a regular on the bus as well 🤷‍♀️

Next time maybe ask the driver why he asked you and not the man?

DOINGOURBIT · 18/07/2021 15:42

Same reason some bus drivers allow mass groups of teenagers on without a card / payment, but refuse someone who genuinely doesn't have the right fare. It's because you're an easy target and not likely to cause trouble. Sad, but true.

PumpkinKlNG · 18/07/2021 15:43

I think I will ask next time, very strange. It does feel like it’s because they see it easier to challenge women

Agree that you're less likely to get arsey with him.

The vast majority of people I see without masks are burly blokes who no one would dare argue with. Makes it worse for everyone.

BewareOfTheAgapanthus · 18/07/2021 15:45

He’s a bus driver not an infant teacher, so maybe he’s just not been trained to impose firm but fair discipline.
Yes, it’s probably because he’s frightened of the man and not of you.

Regularhuman · 18/07/2021 16:04

I work with public and to be honest I don't always register straight away if people are wearing a mask or not.

Covid: Bus drivers 'three times more likely to die' than other workers

At least 51 drivers in the capital have died since the pandemic began after catching coronavirus, according to Transport for London.
