When to isolate with poorly baby

11 month old has a very runny nose, little bit of a cough (I think from the flem), no temp and otherwise well. Do we need to isolate?

Sorry if this is a stupid question Blush

I would book a pcr test and isolate until negative results comes in.

Hope they feel better ASAP

Uramaki · 17/07/2021 13:27

Phlegm (I think). I've been a similar position and nursery said when cough is persistent (so not clearly from just eating lunch or just a couple of coughs in the day) then isolate and get test. It is a pain as there have been a lot of coughs! But it's better than risking the whole group getting covid.

3WildOnes · 17/07/2021 13:29

My baby has had occasional coughs when she has had a cold. Nursery were happy for her to attend still and we didn’t isolate.

zoeydollie · 17/07/2021 13:29

If they have a cough then you should test/isolate.

toastantea · 17/07/2021 13:36

I wouldn't test a baby unless I absolutely had to. Do you have work/nursery to consider?

Pigeonorcoot · 17/07/2021 13:46

No work or nursery.

She hasn't coughed in the last wake period (3.5hrs) and doesn't cough in her sleep or anything, so I wouldn't call it "persistent" or "continuous". But she does cough occasionally. It's the first time she's ever been ill so I have no idea what a normal cold looks like iyswim Confused

And yes - phlegm!

@Pigeonorcoot she's a baby, they get coughs and colds. There are also other illnesses other than covid. The test on a baby is not nice. No way would I do one unless I absolutely had to.

SummerHouse · 17/07/2021 13:57

All things considered, I would just be cautious where you can. It's not a persistent or continuous cough so you are not breaking any rules.

Uramaki · 17/07/2021 14:02

My baby is fine with the test, cries a bit when it gets to 2nd nostril but soon back to happy self. Snap the stick before you do it for more control. Some people do it while baby is asleep. Nursery insists on one if baby has a cough that mets NHS definition: (so I've had to do a few!) It's that or isolate for 10 days.

a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual).

Cosybelles · 17/07/2021 14:03

No. You don't need to isolate.

I wouldn’t call that a cough to be honest.
Pigeonorcoot · 17/07/2021 14:27

@Uramaki I hadn't seen this definition before, so thank you. I will count her coughing episodes and see how many there are. We're not going anywhere today in any case.

I've had to check it a few times as she gets so many colds! It's on the NHS website if you need it.
