50,000+ daily cases today - reported / last week school term

This the highest number positive cases since January (according BBC News). I know it's anticipated to reach 100,000 peak in August but this rate of increase feels like it is happening even faster than predicted, and honestly, my gut is saying it's not worth my dd going into school next week.

We are NOT going on holiday, so this would not be to reduce risk of a holiday being spoilt. But my kids 14yr & 17yr (one has health problems) and it just doesn't seem worth the risk to me. Many really terrible stories about long covid in children - not just adults - and 17/18 - you are an adult really.

I just wondered if anyone else felt the same.
I know a lot of folk will think I am over reacting. DH and I have been double vaccinated. But hearing the high numbers ALREADY only mid July, and the opening up just days away, I honestly wish schools could be closed now, just a few days early, as it feels little to gain/less for kids to lose education wise than they have already - relatively.
Furthermore, according to dd, the school has a whole year group isolating (not hers obviously)& only know this as she told me - so I don't think we getting full info from school about nos positive in school - anyone else sense that with their child's school?

Spreading is quite scary, really. My dc is self isolating, so no school until next Sept. But it did happen quite quickly from no case at all at school to many positive cases in last few weeks.

Case numbers are irrelevant..surely only hospitalisations and deaths are important. I don't understand why everyone is so worried?

I'm teaching online at the moment.

It is shit. The end

More cases means more hospitalization and death, surely? And it's not just death that is a worry. Many people have long lasting effects too.

I really feel like our rates are going to explode. My ds (year 6) has been isolating due to a burst bubble this week so has missed his last week in primary. This is the second time his bubble has burst in one month. At my dd's school the amount of children isolating has increased dramatically. There were only 6 students in her class today (normally 30) Year 12 were remote learning due to high numbers off and we've just had notice that my daughters year and another year are switching to remote learning for last 3 days. This seems worse than the 2nd wave. Although the numbers of seriously ill doesn't seem to be as high due to vaccine roll out, I do worry about the implications of long covid. I think we are entering worrying times.

I'm not giving Covid a second thought. Switch off the news people and live your life!

I think @OnePoundfishhhhh is being sarcastic

Self isolation is causing chaos rather than the actual virus. DH currently has it. Double jabbed since May. It's been like a cold. The vast majority will experience the same.

Hopefully the summer will see the peak and we may feel that the vaccines have done the heavy lifting.

motherrunner · 16/07/2021 20:25

I’m a teacher. We broke up today and have sent a whole KS 4 year group home plus 2 KS3 groups, this in addition to the already isolating bubbles. Multiple cases of positives. Reminds me of the two week run up to Christmas. My own DC don’t break up til next Weds but I have decided to keep them home with me.

ifonly4 · 16/07/2021 20:32

I saw a friend earlier who works at secondary, deals with absences, contact tracing, isolation notices, staffing. Even though it's secondary, she's anticipating a lot of absences next week.

Bivvy · 16/07/2021 21:38

@OnePoundfishhhhh

They’re getting rid off all the restrictions from Monday in the hope that we can all get the virus and die. That’s been the game plan all along. It’s genocide day on Monday, not Freedom Day! But they won’t get me that easy.

I strongly advise everyone else to prepare themselves for the worst.

Are you serious? What are you going to do- sit under your stairs, wearing your mask and tin foil hat, eating the tinned food you stockpiled indefinitely?!

I think you need to seriously consider seeking professional help

TheKeatingFive · 16/07/2021 21:47

I’m beginning to think that poster isn’t entirely serious.

But equally it worries me that I can’t tell on here anymore.
