Would these be considered the start of her symptoms?

DD has tested positive for Covid

Test and trace haven’t contacted her as yet, so she’s trying to workout what she needs to do. She’s supposed to be going away (in the UK) for a few days with friends so isn’t sure whether she needs to cancel/delay it.

On Saturday she woke up with a cracking headache that painkillers wouldn’t shift and felt completely knackered all day - went to bed at 8pm and slept through until lunchtime the next day. Felt pretty much the same on Sunday, but also felt a bit ropey - no particular symptoms, just a bit off.

Monday she woke up with cold symptoms and a mild cough, still feels completely exhausted.

Got a test Monday afternoon and got her positive result Tuesday

She is due to leave for her time away on the 21st.

If they count what she had on Saturday as symptoms, her 10 days will be up. If they count it from when her cold symptoms started on the Monday, they won’t

She’s moved just moved back to her uni house so she’s on her own and stressing and hasn’t heard from T&T yet. We’ve not had to do this ourselves (touch wood) so I don’t know what to advise her.

One of her housemates started with the awful headache on the Sunday and has also tested positive but the other 2 have had no symptoms at all. The only place DD has been was to a pub to watch football on the Wednesday night so she assumes she’s picked it up there

Thanks!

Has your dd worked out when isolation is up yet op? Hope she's feeling bit better.

I'm in a similar position. I have put my 'headache day' as the first day as in hindsight the headache was the first sign, but now I'm doubting myself. What if the headache that day was just a normal headache that I sometimes get with a stressy day at work! I don't want to risk mixing too early and still be contagious to others.

Brokenrecord3006 · 16/07/2021 11:50

If her bad headache and feeling knackered isn't normal for her (I know I can feel like this sometimes when overworked) then I'd consider that the start of her symptoms.

alloalloallo · 16/07/2021 12:23

No, she hasn’t.

Still hasn’t been contacted by test and trace - she’s tried ringing 119 to see if she’d accidentally given the wrong information or something but all is correct and they told her to just sit and wait and they can’t advise her

She’s never had a headache like that before, painkillers didn’t touch it either Saturday or Sunday. She hadn’t done anything particularly strenuous so no reason for the complete and utter knackered-ness either so she’s going with first symptoms as being on the Saturday unless she hears otherwise.

She said she felt a little bit breathless yesterday but it’s mainly cold symptoms. She felt the worst so far so far yesterday, but is much, much better today apart from the cough is annoying and keeping her awake.

I would say the headache is the start of symptoms, if they're not normal for her. Test and trace might go by positive test though, I'm not sure.

Is she vaccinated?

HelloMissus · 16/07/2021 12:26

Isolation starts on the first day of symptoms not test. So as soon as she got her headache (provided she hadn’t been out partying the night before Grin).

HelloMissus · 16/07/2021 12:27

When T&T get in touch she must make it very clear which day her symptoms began.

alloalloallo · 16/07/2021 12:35

Thank you!

No, she hadn’t been out partying

She went out on the Wednesday her her housemates to watch the football but hadn’t been out again other than a quick trip to Sainsbury’s on the Thursday - plus the lucky cow doesn’t get hangovers - the joys of being 19 again Grin

She had her first Pfizer jab on the 1st July

Her symptoms are from Saturday,so needs to isolate from then as far as I know.

pigglepot · 16/07/2021 12:49

I would think it's pretty irresponsible to go on holiday if you've tested positive and/or have symptoms regardless of when they may have started 🤷‍♀️

HelloMissus · 16/07/2021 12:50

It’s 10 days including Saturday.
And it’s not remotely irresponsible to do whatever she needs to or wants to after that.

pigglepot · 16/07/2021 12:51

Sorry wasn't trying to be rude with that comment I just wouldn't personally rely on test and trace contacting me to make an assessment. I think we all need to try and protect each other and if there's a possibility she is contagious she shouldn't go anywhere at all.

pigglepot · 16/07/2021 12:51

If you could guarantee that was the start of the incubation period...which she can't

Which is why she’s trying to work out when her isolation period ends 🤷‍♀️

These are the government issued rules (which have a bit of leeway baked in).
No one has to do more than 10 days isolation. There is no scientific evidence to say it will help.

BitchIAmFromChicago · 16/07/2021 12:53

Saturday is the start of her symptoms so she’ll be fine to go away on the 21st. My DH’s first symptom was a horrendous headache too.

alloalloallo · 16/07/2021 13:18

Thank you!

She’s going camping with a group of friends so if she needs to cancel, she wants to do it sooner rather than later.

She said the headache was horrendous, she’s never had anything like it before and nothing was touching it. All day Saturday and Sunday, but had gone when she woke up on the Monday with cold symptoms

HelloMissus · 16/07/2021 13:23

I’d say a definite Covid symptom that headache.
Hope she’s on the mend

poshme · 16/07/2021 14:13

Headache definite symptom. I have covid at the moment and the headache (and loss of smell) are my main symptoms.

CherryPlumCrow · 16/07/2021 14:23

Yes the first day with symptoms is the Saturday with the headache. So she'll be fine to go away.

I would think it's pretty irresponsible to go on holiday if you've tested positive and/or have symptoms regardless of when they may have started

But she won't be contagious then, so why should she give up a holiday?? Hmm

Yes there's definite leeway built in. I read that you are contagious 2 days before symptoms start till around 6 days after but obviously nobody can be that accurate so go by the 10 days post symptom nhs advice to be on the safe side.

alloalloallo · 16/07/2021 15:01

Thank you all Flowers

She’s going with Saturday unless she’s told otherwise.

I’ve told her to be very clear with T&T that the symptoms started with the horrendous headache on Saturday.

Thank you!
