4 year old told to isolate but has no symptoms, will miss new school intro event

My 4 year old daughter's nursery messaged us this evening to say there had been a positive Covid case in her group and she needs to isolate for 10 days (until next Thursday). Daughter has no symptoms currently. This Friday she has an event at her new school (starting school September), it's a after school event for all the new reception children and she was really looking forward to it and to meeting her new classmates. If no symptoms and negative LFT would you isolate or attend the event? Just interested in people's views.

ISOLATE! Do not turn up with a child who is supposed to be isolating and risk the health of others.

Isolate.

I will keep her isolated, I know it's the right thing to do. Just so frustrating that we have to do this again when no symptoms.

But if she was asymptomatic she could give it to those other children or the teacher. Don’t be that person.

Dementedswan · 15/07/2021 01:10

She has to isolate. Millions of children have missed out on events these last 18 months, you can't risk others because your child is looking forward to something.

A child at our local nursery attended because he had a negative lft whilst waiting for PCR results.

The PCR was positive.

Now a lot of nursery kids miss the end of term.

I soltate. Lfts font always detect it and we have 10 days isolation for a reason.

Isolate not I soltate!

Definitely isolate and honestly sorry but the school might even put it off if multiple children are affected

It’s not an option it’s the law. She HAS to isolate.

Of course isolate Confused

Isolate.

  1. because LFTs just aren't that reliable. I had a positive PCR on the Wednesday, but my lateral flow was negative. Didn't get a positive LFT until Saturday - four days after I tested positive. If I'd relied solely on LFT, I'd have been spreading it everywhere!

  2. Because it's the law, and your child's nursery will send her EYFS file onto her new school. It's highly likely that either setting would find out you hadn't isolated and were meant to - if your child's new school said "X came for her induction visit this week and we noticed her phonics are strong, can you send over her file a ASAP" etc, then it's too likely either setting might realise what you've done, and you don't want to get off on the wrong foot. Also, parents talk. All you hear in playgrounds now is "did you hear X school has closed their year 5 AND 6 bubbles?! Did you hear all of X nursery is isolating?!" etc. Someone at the school might realise you should be isolating and you'll be "that" parent for the next 7 years

Obviously isolate. It sucks. So many children have missed so many educational milestones. So many firsts and lasts that parents havent been able to join them for. So many school transitions that havent been able to happen in person. So many events (field trips, residentials, leavers dos, sports days, pantomime trips, school plays etc). It truly sucks. But please isolate.

SmallestInTheClass · 15/07/2021 13:53

Isolate. It's hard but 1000s of children (including one of mine) are in the same position. The same was true last year when we were in lockdown. I wouldn't break the law and risk infecting other families just before they break up for the school holidays. I do feel for you though, it's so tough when they have been looking forward to seeing their new school and makes it all the harder to start in September when they haven't been there before.
