How can 16/17year olds get the vaccine?

Hi, I have read on several posts that some older children / young adults ! have had the vaccine already. My dd is 17 but at a very large sixth form college where the range 16-18years (over 4000 students at the college) and just would feel happier if dd had the opportunity to be vaccinated. I know there has to be a cut off point age wise somewhere, but hearing that some 16/17year olds have received the vaccine, wondered how they came to be invited? Is it CEV groups? Research? Thanks

My 16yo DS1 has had both doses. We had a text from our GP inviting him to book, so we did! I assume it was because he was diagnosed with asthma a couple of years ago and given both blue and brown inhalers. It is incredibly mild, though, and he hasn't used either inhaler for over a year 🤷‍♀️

There is a link to a reddit forum on this thread
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4294745-Second-pfizer-jab-earlier-than-8-weeks
I think the reddit forum will also cover where you can get a 16/17 yo vaccinated.

My 17yr old is 18 at the end of july and still can't get his first.
This means that his second will be after he's started at university.
He's asthmatic as well.

basically reddit > getjabbed

examina · 14/07/2021 10:09

Good luck.
It is shameful that the MHRA says it is safe, GPs can give it if they have spare, but JCVI (not the regulatory authority) wants to examine the data (which goes to the MHRA, not JCVI)

My 16y old also get the text invite from our GP because he lives in the same household as a parent who was on the CEV shielding list apparently.

I'm now trying to get 14y old sibling vaccinated, like the rest of Europe, but apparently that's not a thing here yet, despite the vaccine now being licenced for 12+

RandomMess · 14/07/2021 10:14

17 year old got invited but we have already had a few 16+ walk in clinics.

This is doing my head in. Why can’t secondary age kids get vaccinated now? They could start with Y13 and work backwards since it seems worse the older you are. What is the point of it being approved for 12-17 year olds but not vaccinating them? There was a recent article in the Mirror saying 16/17 year olds would probably get first dose late Aug but no confirmation of this.

My DD17 got it because my DH is CEV. Some of her friends have had it but all of them either are in a household with a CEV member or are vulnerable themselves (Crohns for example). Other than those two groups I don’t think they’re eligible at 17. In fact I read I. The Times earlier that the JCVI is expected to am recommend against vaccinating children (regardless of the vaccine being approved for 12-15 yr olds).

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 14/07/2021 11:04

I know of one 17 year old who had it because she works part time in a care home

SvenandSven · 14/07/2021 11:37

My ds16 is fully vaccinated 2nd jab being 3 weeks ago. He has a condition that makes him cv.

So much easier just to lock them up: 850,000 currently isolating atm Sad

LarsErickssong · 14/07/2021 12:07

All the walk ins in my area are offering jabs to 16-17 year olds (as long as it's Pfizer obviously), I'm in Lancashire though so I think we have a lot more walk ins than other places? I'm only in a small town but there's at least 7 places local to me that offer walk ins.

nether · 14/07/2021 12:14

They can if they are group 6 (clinically vulnerable, or household of CEV) or if they are a young carer.

Not all clinics will do u18s, even if the person has had their first jab (they need a higher qualification of the on-site medical supervisor, or so I was told)

I think it might be a good idea to open up bookings to all 16+, and 12+ who are CV, by early August, so first jabs are taking effect by the time school starts

Sonarl · 14/07/2021 15:02

Only 16-17 for household.of CEV at the moment, not 12-15, apparently.

cheninblanc · 14/07/2021 15:45

She has epilepsy. The gp surgery called her in March and she is 17 so had both jabs a while now

Cet73 · 14/07/2021 19:42

Thanks for the responses. Feels a bit of a post code lottery again with some 16yr being invited even if no cev / extra risks, but glad to hear at risk children are being offered it. My dd does have severe mh problem (OCD) which she has had most her life and has been severe enough to be hospitalised and with covid it has got worse and she been extremely fearful of going to college - and missed lots. So I wonder if she might be offered it based on that.

I’m raging about this. The unfairness of the postcode lottery, the fact that in other countries they’d be offered the vaccines. This age group are in large sixth forms, colleges, even out working in public facing roles as casual workers or apprentices.
The risk to them and those around them is unacceptable.
I keep hoping someone with legal knowledge will announce it is an infringement of their rights to not be offered this protection, when many in this group are effectively living and working as adults.
But then I do have a very active imagination!
This is the age group whose lives have possibly seen the most long term impact from COVID. Cancelled exams, limited school experience, delayed milestones, such as driving lessons, blindly accepting college and uni places without being able to visit. And then no vaccine either.
My only conclusion is that the government really do not care about teenagers.
I hope these same teenagers remember that when they’re eligible to vote…..

PrincessNutNuts · 14/07/2021 20:44

Any 16 and 17 year olds get jabbed if they have caring responsibilities?

I remember seeing a Bolton or Blackburn public health official on the news saying that "if you get shopping for your grandad, or now your nan's lawn, you're a carer and can get vaccinated at a walk in to protect them.

quoderatdemonstradum · 14/07/2021 21:35

I have had the jab but I would avoid my children getting it at all costs.

cherin · 14/07/2021 21:38

I have tried talking to our Gp about it (we’re going to spend the summer with a grandpa who has MH issues and refuses the vaccine) and was told in very strict term that it wasn’t possible. Tried a walk in and didn’t work either. I’ve given up. Abroad (in the 2 countries where we come from) he would have had the second dose already

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 14/07/2021 21:38

I’m in Alberta, Canada. Children 12 and up can have the Pfizer here.

Howshouldibehave · 14/07/2021 21:43

I hope that something changes ASAP and parents who want to can get anyone over 12 done.
