Positive test prior to return to England from abroad

Hi, we are due to go to the canaries(gran canaria) in September but I am worried about having to do a test prior to return to the Uk and what happens if you test positive. Would you have to isolate in the country? How do they enforce this? Is it a quarantine type hotel? I've looked endlessly online but can't find anything that says what happens just that a test is required before home travel. Does anyone know that could advise? Thanks

@Bitofachinwag

And then you can't travel back until you test negative, which can take weeks apparently.
Remember those young men in Italy last year? They were stuck out there for weeks and weeks until they tested negative

It’s a calculated risk

But look at the risks versus the UK

Have you caught it here ?
Are your kids in a crowded classroom ?
Are you in a crowded shopping Center etc etc ?

But if you are a worrier it’s probably not worth going as the stress will ruin the trip sadly

@Thisisworsethananticpated it's entirely possible that DS has had symptomless covid and perhaps us - although we've had the odd headache and sore throat that might have been it. Difference is we're not obligated to test for it here.

But yes you're right I am a worrier.I just hope those who get stuck abroad have decent insurance.

There are companies that provide you with lft that you take with you on holiday, do in your room, upload photo as they issue fit to fly

Theresfore “in theory” you could all test yourself Fiat with your own lft and if someone is positive get somesone else to do your ‘official flight lft as you only need the photo

Not saying it’s right but many providers inc TUI have tests like this which actually means you’d make it home

rookiemere · 15/07/2021 08:06

I wondered about that @Watapalava - I thought that it had to be a video test or an in person one, but if you just need to upload a photo it would be so easy to fake. I'm not entirely sure I'm doing my lateral flow tests at home correctly anyway as it's so hard sticking the thing down the back of your throat.

Travel insurance don’t seem to cover it

I got mine as my
Kids were visiting father which is allowed under the Uk law as ‘essential travel’

But a holiday is highly likely to not be covered

Another stress to factor in
And , people are travelling to Spain

And keeping a low profile while there to manage the risk

Watapalava · 15/07/2021 08:09

Most travel insurance inc covid cover

I think you’re more protected with operators as tui cover hotel and return flights for isolation

Yes Rookie some are video but Tui is defo photo as I’ve got it for my holiday next week

@Remmy123

Rates are much much lower in most other countries than the U.K.!
Yes but you are travelling with people on the flight from the U.K. and likely mixing in the resort with people from the U.K.

am amazed anyone is thinking of going abroad tbh but I am one of those people whose holiday would be ruined by the stress of it!

not only have you got the risk of a green country turning to amber or red and then being stuck, you've got the possibility of testing positive and being forced into some horrible isolation place

if you're anything like me, I'd get your deposit back and save up for something else!

notimagain · 15/07/2021 08:18

The guidance on this is hard to find, but it does state even if you are an English National and have been vaccinated you will not be allowed to enter the UK without a negative test.

Generic gov/FCO advice here:

www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-testing-for-people-travelling-to-england

In a nutshell you must test before travel to England (£500 fine if you make it as far as the UK and get caught).

If you test positive overseas you must follow local rules/guidance.

Summersdreaming · 15/07/2021 08:19
@Summersdreaming in your situation I would get the whole family to do several lateral flow tests and at least one PCR test each before going. We are going to do similar actually.
I'm still testing negative on LFT now despite positive PCR so I'm less worried about LFT. God it's just all hard work to even think about isn't it?

Yep all of this, but our trip is to attend my closest friend's very delayed wedding, so if I can reasonably get there I will. If I can't I can't.
StrongArm · 15/07/2021 10:28

@Summersdreaming totally get you. My dad lives abroad (in a red country) and I haven't seen him for 2 years now :(. I dread him getting sick because it will be so difficult to get out there/get back.
