Positivelycorona · 13/07/2021 12:19

Sorry for tmi. Tested positive and feeling awful. Starting getting weird choking coughing sensation and keep bringing up large bits of dark brown sputum. What is this in connection with the virus

I think you should talk to your GP about this.

Positivelycorona · 13/07/2021 13:18

Sorry I should say I’ve been trying to get hold of GP it’s a notorious bad surgery. Automated message saying lines are busy. 111 is out of hours only and they refer you back to GP who I can’t get through to

Coughing up blood is a medical emergency. If you can't get hold of your GP, you need to go to A/E

Hotpinkangel19 · 13/07/2021 13:25

Sounds like you need urgent help, symptoms of a PE.

Positivelycorona · 13/07/2021 13:35

Can you go to A and E with covid? As in just go in yourself?

Imfedupwithallofthis · 13/07/2021 13:35

Pulmonary embolism, PE, clot on lung, is apparently a very common side effect of Covid-19. It needs urgent assessment and treatment.
Please let us know how you get on.

Mickarooni · 13/07/2021 13:35

Sometimes NHS 111 can get you a GP appointment. Alternatively, you need to go to an urgent care/walk in clinic. If none of those options work, A&E today.

Orangesandlemons77 · 13/07/2021 14:30

My DH had this with what we think was covid right back at the start of all this last spring (no tests at the time) to reassure you, he recovered OK.

The GP gave him some antibiotics which he took at home. Best get checked out though and ask for medical advice. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Mindymomo · 13/07/2021 14:31

If you have been coughing constantly, it can make you cough up blood, but I would want to get it seen. If you go to A&E there are usually 2 areas, one red for covid or possible covid and green for anything else.

Orangesandlemons77 · 13/07/2021 14:36

What we did is rang the GPs who got the GP to ring back (it was pretty quick) and they talked to DH. In case that helps any.

Imfedupwithallofthis · 13/07/2021 14:52

@Positivelycorona

Let's hope your lack of response is because you are being seen by a doctor, either GP or in A/E

Oneearringlost · 13/07/2021 14:54

A&E def if you can't get a GP appt .

ifonly4 · 13/07/2021 15:03

Admittedly my DU is elderly, but when his wife phoned the Doctor and said he was coughing up blood, they were told to phone for am ambulance.

Hope you're ok. Let us know what happens.

Positivelycorona · 13/07/2021 16:51

Sorry I keep falling asleep and wake coughing. 111 said don’t go to A and E as that’s not what it’s for. It’s for breaks/ sprains / burns only . Who knew? I will wait till 6 pm then call again

Porcupineintherough · 13/07/2021 16:55

Do you mean coughing up little bits of dried blood like coffee grains? I had that with COVID, caused by all the coughing. Assume it was necrotic lung tissue.

lompolo · 13/07/2021 17:05

If you are coughing up blood that is a medical emergency!! A &E now, don't go back to sleep

olidora63 · 13/07/2021 17:05

I had a really nasty chest infection a couple of weeks ago . Coughing so much. When I started to bring up phlegm it did have old blood mixed in . This happened for about 4 days mainly first thing in the morning. I did stress at first but the combination of inflammation and the force of coughing was the most obvious reason.
If it is fresh blood or increasing and you are breathless it probably is wise to speak to GP .

curlyLJ · 13/07/2021 18:05

I had this when I had a chest infection with a nasty (not Covid) virus.

I ended up with pneumonia and needed 2 lots of antibiotics to clear it as it was mis-diagnosed by an incompetent nurse practitioner. You need to see a GP ASAP.

Positivelycorona · 13/07/2021 18:22

@Porcupineintherough it sounds gross but it was a very large bit of something that looked like phlegm which was dark red/brown . I’m phoning 111 as soon as it strikes 6 pm

111 are not fit for purpose. Do not ring them again.
Coughing up blood could be signs of a PE as we have said before.

PE is a medical emergency, needing assessment and treatment ASAP by a qualified medical practitioner, not by a call handler.

It is exactly what A/E is for.
Don't want to scare you, but in some cases it can be fatal. If GP does not respond, go to A/E.
Hope not to hear from you again till you have seen a doctor.

Imfedupwithallofthis · 14/07/2021 16:38

@Positivelycorona

Are you ok? Hope you got seen yesterday.
