Are teenagers next for vaccination? Presumably with new term in September I am guessing this will be next, to avoid isolations

I hope so. DS has done 3 isolations already and is fed up. His cousins in the US have been vaccinated for ages.

I think in UK we're still waiting for JCVI - who have said they are waiting on more data - but are I think due to put a report out fairly soon.

They may end up doing booster vaccines for 50+ first - guesss we'll have to wait and see what decided.

Though in England and Wales they're changing the school rules around isolation come September.

Schools to be able to decide on Covid rules from September under Welsh Government plans

My 17 year old had his first around 5/6 weeks ago

Technically any one 12+ can be done - as MHRA gave a UK licence that but it's not being offered here to under 18s routinely here yet - not even 16-18 year olds.

UK approves Pfizer jab for 12 to 15-year-olds

I think some CEV parents have managed to get their teens done but I don't think it was easy.

I've also read on here some 17 volunteering at vaccination centers have been jabbed - but they don't seem to use people that young at our nearest.

If the JCVI come out in favour of mass vaccination of that age group Wales have already said they'll do a vaccination program - so here it's still wait and see.

I think it's more that close contact isolation will be scrapped and replaced with testing.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 13/07/2021 12:31

I hope so. My 13 is very keen to get it and I’ll book her ASAP. My son is 11 but going to secondary so hope he’ll get done soon too.

My 17yo has tried last weekend to go for a spare dose (at an empty VC) and was turned away. The GP says it’s not interested in his family situation. So I hope the govt decides to give the green light for 16-17 at least in the fall. But I don’t think they’ll do it. Right now it is quite clear that they believe the balance risk/benefit is not in favour, and (probably) prefer to see the virus spreading naturally in the age groups instead of vaccinating

cherin · 13/07/2021 13:38

(The lady at the vaccination centre told me in a bit of a convoluted way that…they would not have an issue with doing it, but they have received strict guidance recently NOT to do it. This is a north London location, where the current rate of vaccination is pretty pitiful- 40% double dose, 59% single dose. So if I was a local health official I’d be happy to give it to anyone willing, instead of having spares)

I would really like 16/17 year olds to be offered the vaccination soon. I understand the fact that children are much less likely to be very ill with covid than adults and that testing of vaccines on children is newer (so not as much evidence of side effects etc) than for adults. However, as far as I know all the vaccines being used in the UK have been approved for over 16s from the beginning and the Government's statements about the benefits to them having the vaccine seem to ignore the impact on their mental health and education. Even when close contacts of cases are not required to isolate, I think there will be large numbers of pupils in that age group who have to miss school etc due to having covid themselves. Personally, I think they've missed enough and should be given the option of a vaccine that would drastically reduce the likelihood of contracting the disease. That's before even thinking about the impact of long covid.

Are walk in vaccination centres allowed to do this for a 15 year old? We've got walk in centres open all over our city at the moment

Mine doesn’t

wordsareveryunnecessary · 18/07/2021 16:23

Just seen the news. No jabs for teens unless vulnerable
