Why are they acting like everybody has access to both jabs?

All the news talking about the app/passport. Holidays/clubs etc for the double jabbled. Most youngsters have only just had their first jab. My two probably won’t get second until the end of summer. No journalists ever mention it or ask them if they can speed up. I think most under 25’s would love to have second vaccine with 3 week gap like EU and USA.

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight they can book them earlier though if they want. There are so many pop up vaccine centres daily that anyone can drop in for their 2nd if they want too. My DSS is booked for his 2nd in sept, he had first maybe 3 weeks ago, next week he’s going to go to a drop in centre for his 2nd

mumsneedwine · 12/07/2021 17:54

No they can't. You'll be turned away from a drop in centre if under 8 weeks.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 12/07/2021 17:56

They're talking about it, sure. Whether they'll actually implement it is another matter.

I'm not sure to be honest -- I feel like it's more about nudge psychology to continue to drive younger people to get their vaccinations. (I could well be wrong, and we will find out in the fullness of time!)

nordica · 12/07/2021 18:00

It's also not great for businesses - telling night clubs to make use of covid passes sounds great but how many of their usual visitors are in an age group where they are double vaccinated? I'm 38 and only just had my 2nd at the weekend, and I had booked both jabs at the very earliest opportunity my age group was able to book.

DinosaurDiana · 12/07/2021 18:01

A pop up centre was doing anyone 4 weeks and over near me.

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 12/07/2021 18:02

Drop ins have been available here if you're 3 weeks post first jab. My partner is 35 and had his 3 weeks after the first.

whatkatydid2013 · 12/07/2021 18:03

Is there not talk that they’ll reduce gap to 4 weeks so by August 16th when you can get out of isolating & similar if you’ve had both doses everyone who already got a first dose will be fully vaccinated?

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 12/07/2021 18:03

Yes I’ve heard some of the pop ups have done them after 21 days but others have been very stroppy and said no way. The nhs have apparently told some venues off. Perhaps we need a thread of places that will do them.

OP posts:
lljkk · 12/07/2021 18:06

My strong guess is that 2nd jab window will reduce to >= 6 weeks by about 10 August, and down to >= 4 weeks by mid September. My 19yr old got 2nd jab in early April (11 week gap), my 21 yr old DC will get 2nd jab on ~19 July (4 week gap). Neither of them is at all clinically vulnerable.

I’m wondering about this too. Along with floating the idea of vaccine passports for bars/restaurants again in autumn. Which seems stupid after allowing unvaccinated people to use them all summer Hmm
TotorosCatBus · 12/07/2021 18:08

Our local pop up does second jabs after 4 weeks

Wilkolampshade · 12/07/2021 18:27

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight and @mumsneedwine
Reddit have a metathread for those scoping out early 2nd jabs: www.reddit.com/r/GetJabbed/

I agree for goodness sake bring forward 2nd jabs, my DD1 very keen and will try her luck at a walk in or multiple until she gets one..

mumsneedwine · 12/07/2021 18:36

It's effectiveness is much lower after 3 weeks compared to 8. So I suppose if somewhere will do it you have to decide whether it's worth the lower long term immunity. But these places will lose their right to vaccinate as soon as NHS know about it. Because it is not in their contracts to do it.

Younger people don’t really need the protection anyway. It’s just a tick box exercise for numbers.
Wilkolampshade · 12/07/2021 18:42

@mumsneedwine yes, I've been looking at that today. She feels, and I can see her point, that her risk as a 22 year old is SO much lower anyway that it would be worth it.
Re centres, II know the shifts here are reporting massively lowered take up atm, (North London) which may be encouraging centres to use up doses...?

Thesearmsofmine · 12/07/2021 18:44

We haven’t been able to get the second in earlier than 8 weeks here. Pop up places were turning people away which is madness when here in Kirklees we have been under some kind of restrictions since last March(bar about 2 weeks last summer). I’m getting my second on Friday, DH has been trying to bring his second one forward to 8 weeks but can’t get any appointments.

We're in Kirklees and my partner was given his after 3 weeks. The GP surgery text and said as you are +3 weeks come and get the second dose tomorrow!
Yorkshirepudding1987 · 12/07/2021 19:09

*that was about a month and a half ago that he had his second.

whatswithtodaytoday · 12/07/2021 19:15

Heartily agree OP. I'm 39 and have been extremely keen to get my second, been trawling Reddit for hubs in my area, but nothing until I happened to see on my local Facebook group that a pharmacy near me is getting some limited Pfizer this week. I'm booked for Thursday, earliest they have. Next closest is 30-odd miles away, but only allowing people after 8 weeks.

And now there's a case at my son's nursery, so it's only a matter of time...

PattyPan · 12/07/2021 19:16

Agreed although I wouldn’t go as short as 3 weeks as I think the protection isn’t as good, no need to keep it at 12 though. I’m 26 and my second is booked for August (I managed to rebook from 12 weeks to 8) and DP’s is for September. DP’s friends have tried turning up to get it early and been turned away.

@bumbleymummy everyone I know my age genuinely wants it for the protection - there were huge queues on the NHS website to book it when it opened and that was before they said double jabbed would be exempt from quarantine

JaninaDuszejko · 12/07/2021 19:19

That's AZ which the young aren't getting.

They may want it but their risk is low without it anyway. Didn’t Spiegelhalter recently say that an unvaccinated 30 year old is lower risk than a double vaccinated 60 year old? Age is still the more significant risk factor.
titchy · 12/07/2021 19:27

I can't see many nightclubs turning away their target clientele after the 18 months they've had tbh...

pamplemoussed · 12/07/2021 19:34

My 18 year old has had both as have most of his friends. Pop ups in London will vaccinate after 4 weeks.

MaryBoBary · 12/07/2021 19:37

But the line is always double jabbed OR a negative test. Not double jabbed only.

I'm 31 and my second jab isn't until September. There are lots still to get first jabs. They wouldn't rule out that much of the consumer market. The economy can't afford too. I agree with PP that's it's just to encourage younger people to get jabbed - just in case.
