High temperature in 4 year old

Just after a hand hold whilst I wait for ds test to come back - he has had a really high temperature overnight and today, around 39.9 going down to 38 with calpol, I'm worried about him but doubt gp will see him without the Covid all clear first Sad

How is he now? If temp not going down with calpol/brufen, you may need to speak with 111.x

anothernamereally · 12/07/2021 19:57

He's had both now and it's down to 37.8, he's coughing but still playing etc, I've put him to bed and will keep checking through the night, I'm an experienced mum who doesn't normally panic but he was just so hot! He suffers with his chest too so that adds to my worry

My 3 year old ha sjust had 5 days of high temps, an awful cough and then once the temp died down, a really runny clear nose and now a more normal chest clearing cough. Tested negative for covid though, his brother then got a slight temp and not much else and also tested negative so there is something else doing the rounds that can cause a high temp and awful cough, so don't panic too much as it might just be a normal (horid) virus, lots of fluids, check for any breathing issues.. Sucking in chest etc. Get a covid test and then book to see the Dr to check him over for infection etc. That's what we did... I booked the covid test on day 2 of him being poorly as I had a feeling I'd want to see a Dr to check him with the awful cough he had

DGFB · 12/07/2021 20:05

You need to get him tested for Covid, I take it you’re doing that?
Good he recovers soon but pls test him

Senso21 · 12/07/2021 20:13

My little one had raging temperatures a few months ago which weren’t coming properly with painkillers. Thought it must be covid, got tested but got worse while still waiting for results. GP was concerned and agreed to see her in full PPE at a special hub, turned out to be a water infection which needed antibiotics ASAP. So if he gets worse while waiting for results, make sure he’s seen, there’s more than just Covid and children can get poorly really quickly x

Bobholll · 12/07/2021 21:30

@DGFB - OP’s post literally says ‘I need a handhold while I wait for DS test to come back’ .. get off your high horse 🙄

Bobholll · 12/07/2021 21:33

@anothernamereally - just keep an eye. Tonsillitis can cause high fever, cough & generally refusing food .. my DD has had it 4 times so far this year 🤦🏼‍♀️ A fever up at 39.5, barking cough, wouldn’t eat .. her throat has been covered in white spots 😭 she’s been really poorly each time. The GP has seen us each time without question & no test. We’ve had to go to the red zone at the docs because of the fever..

Netflixandeat · 12/07/2021 21:35

My LO was very poorly a couple of weeks ago, all covid symptoms. My GP refused to see her as we hadn’t received the covid test results back. I ended up taking her to A&E as her temperature wouldn’t come down, the doctors were great and they picked up a couple of things wrong with her (infections) and they didn’t even care if she had been tested or not.

Please don’t hesitate to take your LO to A&E if you feel you have to. Don’t wait for a negative result. Hope they feel better soon.

Clarkey86 · 12/07/2021 21:36

How is he in himself? I really wouldn’t worry about a temp without other worrying symptoms - it’s just the bodies way of killing off the bug. My 4 year old had a similar temp last night and a cough so we’re also waiting for test results, but she’s been fairly happy playing normally etc today so I’m not concerned.

Literally the first line of the OP's post is 'Just after a hand hold whilst I wait for ds test to come back' WHy are you then questioning if she is testing.

Try reading the post properly.

anothernamereally · 12/07/2021 22:10

Thanks everyone- he's the same but no worse, I'm not generally a worrier so not sure what's got into me today, think it's just been a bad few weeks and this is yet another thing. For what it's worth I don't think it is Covid (and yes I got him tested and am waiting for results) both dd and I had it last month and his cough doesn't sound like ours did but who knows, I thought maybe tonsils but he is eating and not saying it hurts.
Anyway thanks for the hand hold I appreciate it, I'll keep giving meds as needed and report back!

Thanks I will do, you can't get into our a and e without a 111 referral but I'll call them if he gets worse

My ds 4 had exactly the same w weeks ago and tested negative, but the cough has only just gone especially at night, he has suffered with chest before. When we first locked down before tests he age 3 had a temp of 39/40 for 7 days calpol fidnt touch it, Ibuprofen did a little, he was quite sick- GP video called a few times and said he would normally be in hospital but if we could hold out at home due to circumstances. He was very I'll. Suspected covid. My point is temperature is his bodies defence on day 7 (we were told to head to a&e on day 8) he finally turned a corner.
Hope hes ok. Theres some nasty viruses about at moment apart from covid.

Hophop26 · 12/07/2021 22:43

@Bobholll @anothernamereally

I was just about to post the same thing, my lo had very high temp, coughs, really sleepy etc 2 weeks ago and turned out to be tonsillitis. GP saw her without having covid test first and we’re really good. Please don’t avoid the doctors if you are worried as in my experience they are seeing people when needed. They were also able to tell us not to get her covid tested as they were so determined it was something else, which saved her from the extra uncomfortableness of that

anothernamereally · 13/07/2021 08:17

Negative, so I can go armed with that info to the gp

Please re-read OP

Gp not sure what it is - ears, tonsils and chest all fine, amoxicillin prescribed and a referral to paeds

lunar1 · 14/07/2021 18:47

There are a lot of children I know coming down with the same. Three of them all with classic Covid symptoms, temperature, loss of taste and cough. All three negative PCR tests. My friend had the test repeated just to be sure (she put her own name in and swabbed her dd 🤦🏻‍♀️) it must be time for the delayed winter cold season.

anothernamereally · 14/07/2021 19:40

I think you're right @lunar1 - the referral to peads is to check an underlying issue that I suspect he has that can be related to the symptoms

lunar1 · 14/07/2021 20:03

I hope everything is ok at his appointment.
