Second pfizer jab earlier than 8 weeks

Iwonder08 · 12/07/2021 15:02

Has anyone managed to get a second pfizer jab earlier than 8 weeks after the first one? Medically there should be 21 days between 2 doses so there is no reason not to have it sooner. Is it at all possible to book earlier if there are special circumstances?

A family member had hers 21 days later , not in the UK though. Keep an eye on the NHS website as I was able to book much earlier as they sped through the vaccinations where I live so it might be the case where you are too.

Yep. I got mine at 3.5 weeks. I’d been keeping an eye on various forums who were giving tipoffs about where you could get them early. It was the 3rd place I tried. You can only really do it at walk in centres. Although some peoples GPS have called them before the 8 week mark. The national booking session will only let you bring it forward to 8 weeks.

The Guardian liveblog referenced one of the vaccination committee talking about that on Radio 4 this morning. tl;dr is you get short term gains from doing the jabs closer together so more people 'fully vaccination' quicker, but lose out on the strength of protection and how long it lasts:

Prof Adam Finn, a member of the JCVI, expressed reservations about the idea. He told the Today programme that, although in some respects people might benefit from getting a second dose early, in other respects they might lose out. He said:

"There is of course an advantage in giving the second dose early, in the current circumstances with all the cases that we are seeing because you get a further boost, but the downside to that is the size of that boost is smaller and probably that will mean that the duration of protection you get from that second dose will be shorter.

So there’s a sweet spot, and at the moment the advice we have given is we should not reduce the interval less than eight weeks."

Ds just told me that he can get his second done between 6-8 weeks, he had his first done on Sunday at a walk in clinic.

I had the moderna jab & was invited by the chemist to get it earlier (5 weeks) so maybe just go to a walk in and see what they say?

I’ve been stewarding today at a pharmacy, and the latest advice from a pharmacist was:

  • you need to leave a gap of at least four weeks to get the full benefit of having two jabs
  • officially, they are only supposed to give the second jab earlier than eight weeks if you have a specific reason and can provide documentary proof: in practice, this has always been a) travelling abroad and b) copy of flight booking
  • however, they don’t want to waste any vaccine at the end of the day, so if you turn up and they’ve got spare, they’ll jab you before 8 weeks even without a specific reason
ChannelLightVessel · 12/07/2021 22:23

I should clarify that the people who got the jab early because of travel were walk-ins; I don’t think the NHS website will let you book less than 8 weeks after the first jab.

Hi I got mine (Pfizer) tonight at seven weeks at a walk in, felt slightly awkward waiting for them to call and check it was ok but they were lovely about it and the doctor they checked with had no issue doing it sooner at all.. although the stewards outside were adamant it had to be over eight weeks so worth asking to talk to someone further up the chain if possible!

It's crazy how the vaccine rules vary between countries. In Ireland it's recommended to have no more than 6 wks between Pfizer doses. I'll be having mine at 5wks, most are 4 wks.

MountainDweller · 13/07/2021 00:31

I was vaccinated in Switzerland - the system is automated and spits out your two appointments at the same time - second one exactly 4 weeks (to the minute) after the first! Had my second end of April and I'm fine so far (am pretty careful though).

MissConductUS · 13/07/2021 00:38

I had mine at 24 days, in the US. There will probably be booster jabs available this fall if they are needed.

voxnihili · 13/07/2021 05:54

I had my first jab late May at my GP and received a text to book my second with them 5 weeks later. Was very pleased as have a holiday booked and didn’t think I’d be double jabbed in time.

Scottishgirl85 · 13/07/2021 06:05

Our local walk in is very strict. 8 weeks minimum or you're turned away.

Girlmama3 · 13/07/2021 07:40

I had my second Pfizer with a 6.5 week gap at a walk in. I’m pregnant and wanted to be fully jabbed before freedom day.

One walk in wouldn’t do but one 15 minutes away would!

In America they have a 3 week gap and there have been no issues.

FizzyPink · 13/07/2021 20:53

That Reddit thread is brilliant for finding places which will jab you after 3 weeks. There were two doing it near us this weekend and DP and I went to one each. Both waited in line for about 90 but neither of us were questioned on why we wanted it early and no one said anything about it.

TreaslakeandBack · 13/07/2021 20:56

We’re doing 3 weeks gap for Pfizer and4 weeks AZ where I vaccinate (Yorkshire).

Bobholll · 13/07/2021 20:59

I got mine at 5 weeks in Yorkshire, Pfizer. They were doing Pfizer at 3 weeks & AZ at 4 weeks..

Cookerhood · 13/07/2021 21:03

Our local walk in is doing anyone over 3 weeks that turns up (unofficially). I vaccinated about 25 people yesterday & I don't think any of them were over 6 weeks.

Nikki305 · 13/07/2021 21:04

Where in Yorkshire please?

FreeBritnee · 13/07/2021 21:04

Just had mine done seven weeks after the first.

IvorHughJarrs · 13/07/2021 21:23

DS1 got his second jab at 4wks and 1 day at a walk-in centre

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 13/07/2021 22:17

Can we name some of those places that will do it? The Reddit forum is huge. I’m looking for a possibility in Kent. Heard swanley might but wondering about canterbury
